We moved into our new house about 3 months ago now. The next door neighbours (who I already knew to say hello/have a brief chat to from when I lived in the next road 5 years ago) have lots of pets, I think 4 cats and a dog. We’re not animal people so maybe being harsh but...

The cats roam like cats do and seem to live in our back garden. We have a big tree on the boarder between our house and theirs (but in our garden) and they are either on that tree, walking along the fence or running around our back garden together. During the warm weather when we have had the patio doors open, I am constantly (once or twice each evening on average I’d say) having to chase them away when they attempt to walk in and on more than one occasion they have made it into my lounge or kitchen.

I kind of think this is just how cats are and there’s not much I can do?

The dog though is another matter entirely. The dog is also allowed out to roam. Not sure what breed the dog is but it’s a small stocky type of dog. It just walks around the street seemingly all day, usually with a soft toy of some description in its mouth. It seems to spend most of its time in our front garden, where it then leaves its toys. Last week one day there were three of its toys out there (two on our lawn and one just to the front of our lawn on the pavement outside our house) and a pile of dog poo next to one of the toys. I didn’t see this dog doing its business on our lawn but it’s a bloody coincidence if it wasn’t him!

Every time I walk out of the front door, to shout the DC’s in or to answer the door, this dog tries to come into my house and I have to literally push it off by its collar. It stands there crying with its toy in its mouth trying to get past me and into the house. It doesn’t listen when it is called, by its owner or by anyone and the only way to get it to move away is by pulling it by the collar and then it just wanders back anyway. It has also made its way into our back garden by following the DCs and has proceeded to wander around peeing everywhere including on the BBQ before the DCs pulled him away.

I’m getting fed up of this totally and am sad for the dog. I don’t see it being taken for walks and this seems to be its exercise. There have been times my DS has been really worried about it as the owners are out and he thinks it’s thirsty so wanted to give it a drink (another neighbour took a bowl out to it before I had to take any action).

Surely this can’t be ok? We just want to live peacefully and shouldn’t have to put up with this dog on our property, pestering and littering and pooing?

The other neighbours just greet it like an old friend from what i’ve seen and seem to be friendly with the owners and pet it etc when they see it although I know that one child on the street is afraid of the dog and my DC has said on more than one occasion ‘i’m Coming in now because X went in when Rover came out’. (Not dog’s real name!)

What would you do? I don’t want to cause any rift but surely surely this can’t be ok?

Thank you

Its not ok to let dogs roam, they can cause a traffic accident. You can call the dog warden or RSPCA about your neighbours.
They sound like neglectful owners. Its unlikely they bother to worm their cats, so clear up any cat mess you find in your garden straight away.

StepBackNow · 17/06/2018 08:50

Next time you see it roaming contact the local dog warden. Do this every time you see it. A few fines may concentrate their mind.

Gather them all up into your car and ditch them afew towns away. My neighbour rid our neighbourhood of crapping cats by doing this the total legend

Total cunt more like and you’re not much better for thinking he’s a legend!

We have an electronic cat scarer, £20 from Amazon. It makes a high pitch noise cats (and possibly dogs?) don't like. Could try setting it at your back door pointing towards your garden; it might at least keep them out your property.

longwayoff · 17/06/2018 10:23

Buy a water pistol - just a small one not one of those turbo charged super soaker things - and squirt at the cats when u see them in your garden. Just enough so they gets few drops on them. They will stay away after you have done this two or three times. As for the dog . . . Don't know. Poor thing.

TTCI · 17/06/2018 10:27

@GrannyGrissle that is animal cruelty you sick twat. Clearly you've been dragged up with 0 respect or compassion for any living thing. Pathetic.

crispysausagerolls · 17/06/2018 10:36

The first thing to do is to go to your neighbour and explain their dog has defecated on your front lawn and it needs cleaning. Then that their dog spends all day there and leaves his toys. See how they respond.

If they don’t respond well then you need to escalate it with dog wardens etc, but I think the best thing is to try to discuss with the neighbour first. This is completely out of order/irresponsible/neglectful

Springleek1 · 17/06/2018 22:32

What the person did that Granny Grissle is talking about is extremely cruel . Poor families 😔

JellyBean571 · 17/06/2018 22:47

GrannyGristle what the fuck?!

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 17/06/2018 22:51

I don’t by like electronic devices because they might affect other animals.

Water pistol should do it with the cats.

The dog shouldn’t be out roaming, that’s not safe for him or for anyone else.

ItsNachoCheese · 17/06/2018 22:56

grannygristle your neighbour is an utter knobjockey for doing that your no better for supporting them

CremeDeLaCrap · 17/06/2018 22:57

I agree the dog shouldn't be left to roam and they sound very neglectful of their pets, but how is it even getting into your garden? Can you put a fence/gate up?

PotteryGirl · 17/06/2018 22:59

GrannyGristle...You are a troll. Casually posting a comment like that with what, I imagine, to be a smile on your face can only be the work of someone trying to be a smart arse.

Whattheheq · 17/06/2018 23:00

GrannyGrissle I hope someone reported him to the police, that’s horrible!!!

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 17/06/2018 23:02

I’m afraid Granny might well be a regular poster, there have been plenty of suggestions how to hurt dogs on a other threads today.

Must be something in the water.

Elasticity · 17/06/2018 23:21

Agreed a subtly placed electronic device in front and back garden.

Hopefully they work and happy days!

WTFnnoh · 18/06/2018 01:52

I believe it’s actually illegal to let dogs roam like this? I’m not sure the police would take it seriously as it’s obviously not a dangerous dog but I’m sure if you contact your local dog warden they will come out and speak with the owners. You can find out who the dog warden is through the council. It’s totally unfair on you to have this dog crapping on your lawn but also really unsafe for the poor dog. I’m always amazed at people who take risks with their animals like this.

As for the cats maybe you could speak to the owners regarding this. Four cats is a lot of cats to allow to roam. You could suggest they cat proof their garden, at least along the boundary they share with you. Or maybe they would consider only allowing the cats out during the day when you are at work so at least they won’t be bothering you with entering your house etc.

I love animals but people who don’t take responsibility for their pets and allow them to be a nuisance to others really wind me up.

FeistyOldBat · 18/06/2018 04:28

For the cats, a washing up liquid bottle filled with plain water will do. A good squirt on a full bottle will go 30 feet (the length of the drive of my previous house). You only need to straddle the cat, not hit it directly.

The dog would probably think it fun; sorry I have no ideas for that except what's already been suggested. Poor thing.
