Chinese restaurant

Dish on the menu last night at a Chinese restaurant - King prawns glazed in honey. Sounds delicious.

Dish arrives and it looks like it's got melted cheese all over it. We ask the waiter what the dish was, he didn't know, hadn't ever seen it before. We ask another waiter and he says oh yes, that's the honey king prawns. But why's there cheese all over it? No, no... no cheese, it's mayonnaise.

WTF??!!

Apparently that's one of their house specialities, a traditional old Chinese dish.

I'm sceptical but happy to be told otherwise by the mumsnet jury! And why the hell didn't they mention the mayo on the menu?!

Flintstone, definitely not in central Vietnam?! Patty, sausage, cucumber, yes. But I've never had Banh mi from the street seller with mayonnaise. I have gone into a few places in ho Chi Minh City, sandwich places that do grilled chicken and other things, and they put mayonnaise in.

I remember when I first started working away in 2007 and you still really didn't have many foreign type restaurants around, I think only places like What used to be the Hung Vuong inn Had mayonaise.

Flintstone thank you for that! 11 years doing projects in Vietnam, and I just found out what the source is. To me, that doesn't taste like mayonnaise though! It's very spicy, at least the ones in Ue and Quang Tri. I absolutely hate mayonnaise! 😂😂

I know it might be a bit early for a curious mind, but this is pretty interesting to read. It's how Chinese food involved.

I found a Vietnamese one too, I knew about Pho coming about because of the French, but I didn't realize they had influence the coffee so much. I've only ever had flan from the street sellers in Hue but it tasted too much of an egg, I couldn't eat it. Goodness, you're making me very homesick. We're doing a project later on in the year, so I will be in Vietnam for that. But this is making me miss Vietnam.

Oh my goodness, I just googled mayonnaise on shrimp in China and it gave me a lot of discussions on it. It seems that in foreign places, it's quite popular. I haven't heard of it before. I also found an article on condiments in China. They are becoming increasingly popular.

Well, I'd say you know better than me as I've never been to Vietnam!! Ha! But I do go to Little Vietnam in Melbourne a lot and I've never had one without mayo, or butter and mayo mixed. The vast majority of customers in Little Vietnam are Vietnamese refugee migrants and their offspring, not white Australians.
To me, that doesn't taste like mayonnaise though! It's very spicy They do add a dressing once they've filled it. Maybe it's that?

Should add that I'm not a banh mi expert. I do love eating them and probably saw about the history on a cooking show Blush Made sense to me at the time Blush

Dairy lee triangles can be found in street food in south east asia too!

Flintstone, I love, love, LOVE Melbourne! I was only there for a few weeks for vision Australia's conference and for a bit of relaxing, but I fell in love with the coffee, the food, what's that Italian bakery? I can't think of the name. Brunetti! That's it!

I love Vietnamese food, but Australians traveling to Vietnam tell me that they have a hard time eating the real Vietnamese food, I think because the quality of the meet in Vietnam isn't so good etc. And Vietnamese who newly arrived in Australia tell me they have a hard time eating the Vietnamese food in Australia. I went to one of the Vietnamese restaurants, and ordered my favorite dish, and the meat tasted very different.

Oh, and definitely yes to the dairy Lee triangles. I don't know what they put in the yogurts and the cheese though since it sits out in 30° heat all day. I don't think it's actually dairy. I'm talking about Vietnamese yogurts here. You walk through the market, and the yogurts are out.

Flintstone, just a fun fact, but because of my visual impairment and inability to read maps, our use landmarks. Brunetti was one of my landmarks in Melbourne because I was staying on Little Collins Street at first. Even now, I can remember exactly where it is!

HelloKittyMania - Flintstone, I love, love, LOVE Melbourne! You probably know Melbourne better than me too. I live in the sticks but my good friend lives in Footscray, and I visit her quite a bit and we wander down to Little Saigon Market. You go everywhere! Grin
