To think there could be some still done? LODGER

So my partner had a lodger. She seemed fine at the interview but turned out she is a right on disgusting bitch. She moved in last March. My partner got the deposit and first month rent and she was fine paying next month but after that payments seemed to be a bit disorganised.
Anyway he spoke to her and she said her mum has cancer and been traveling back and forth to see her and train tickets are expensive. She kept promising to catch up on payments but by August she owned him at least 2 months rent(if not 3, I can't remember exactly)

End of August, the 31st I was on my own in the house as my partner was away with work. We both kept messing her about the rent and she kept ignoring. On the 1st of September while I was at work she entered the house and moved out as much of her stuff as she could. We still have some of her stuff but bagged up now. I think she owes my partner at least £800 but getting a lawyer to get that money back would cost a fortune in fees. Is there anything we could do? It's been almost a year and so bothers me my partner didn't do anything after it turned out how much the lawyer would cost.

I'd call citizen's advice bureau but it's likely there isn't much you can do.

Bloody annoying though!

I just feel like sending her an email and threaten her a bit. She still has a key - although we changed the locks but that's now the point. I was thinking of saying that the house is on the market and make up a story that we need all keys to complete the sale. And also give him his money back otherwise the police will be involved.
😂 It's probably silly but honestly she used her mum has cancer story I mean how disgusting she is?!

You can raise a claim in the small claims court for about £35.

LodgerDrama · 16/06/2018 22:41

@Gibble1 and if we won she'd have to pay the money back ?

What did her contract say regarding missed payments and notice period ?

llangennith · 16/06/2018 22:49

You can try small claims court or you could just write it off and move on. Annoying but it’s affecting you more than ex-lodger who’s moved on.

As a lodger (been one) you have barely any rights at all. It’s not the same as renting privately with an Assured Shorthold Tenancy. You can be asked to leave at any time with no notice. I personally wouldn’t have let it get as far as it did but if they’ve moved out then just put it down to experience.

Yes. If she doesn't, you can upgrade to the High Court and have Sheriffs with a Writ of Entry for £60! NOBODY can fob off High Court Sheriffs!!!!!
