To hate the hype around football tournaments?

That’s it really!

I’m not a football fan. There are alot of other sports I’m not a fan of either but it’s football that annoys me the most.... it’s just rammed down our throats more than any other sport and it pissing me off atm that I can even listen to my regular radio station without someone constantly going on about it!

Oh no I don’t mean the actual programmes, I just don’t watch them. I mean all the talk about them on the radio etc. I somehow manage to not watch it but still know all the names of the contestants because they’re talked about all the time.

notsohippychick · 17/06/2018 08:49

Oh for goodness sake. It’s every 4 years. There’s a reason why people love it. It’s an amazing game.

If you don’t like it switch it off. Although you are also ironically doing what you complain of by writing about the World Cup on here are you not?

Sunnymeg · 17/06/2018 08:55

There is hardly any hype at all for this World Cup compared with previous ones. There have been a couple of excellent matches and doubtless England will flatter to deceive when they play tomorrow night, but it is all rather mooted at the moment and all the better for it.

StopWhisperingStopShouting · 17/06/2018 09:57

I’m not interested iin bgt or xf, or strictly or love island either.... Yes I hate it when strictly is all they go on about on the radio.

I know the downhill in scotland was just one leg. Waas just referring to the fact that’s it was local

LoveHateLove · 17/06/2018 10:28

I'm sick of it too. And you can't "turn over" when it's on every bloody radio station/TV channel!

The World Cup may only be every 4 years but in between there's the Euros and that's as bad.
It's been on pretty much constantly in our house since it started. Even when it's not being properly watched.
I've already read an entire book and we're only 4 days in or something.
I completely agree with you OP

SoyDora · 17/06/2018 10:49

The fact is though, lots of people do like it. They only show it on lots of channels/talk about it on radio stations because there are many people who do want to hear about it.
We all have to suck up hearing about things we’re not interested in some of the time. In the grand scheme of things, it’s no big deal.
And I think any opportunity to read a book is a good one!

ilovesooty · 17/06/2018 10:53

It's not on every TV and radio channel.

HolyMountain · 17/06/2018 10:55

We’re a football mad house and we love itGrinFootball.

I appreciate not everyone feels the same.

Come on England tomorrow night!!

StarbucksSmarterSister · 17/06/2018 11:20

OP, YANBU. . I bloody hate football - or rather the palaver that goes with it. The fuss about these overpaid prima donnas drives me nuts. For me it's not the World Cup per se (I might watch the final if there's nothing else on) , but the fact that this game is constantly shoved in our faces. The season lasts for about 10 months and then you get the World Cup, European whatever, etc coming at various times to fill the gap. I admit I particularly get annoyed that it interferes with my enjoyment of Wimbledon, which may well be on every year but only for 2 weeks and there is very little tennis on tv anyway

I am working in an open plan office with, in particular, 2 people who insisted on a blow by blow, tackle by tackle, conversation about every fecking game and it only started on Thursday. By the time next weekend comes I may well have gagged them.

StarbucksSmarterSister · 17/06/2018 11:33

And why full coverage of stuff like Russia vs Saudi or Morocco vs Iran that haven't a hope of winning? Why not show highlights? People are referring to Wimbledon here but I've been watching for decades and have never seen tv coverage of matches between two players who're ranked way down the listings (unless they're British of course Grin

JacquesHammer · 17/06/2018 11:34

Surely people who are interested will have a sports channel to watch it on

Yes just what we need, yet more sport that is only accessible to people who can pay for it.

I'm sick of it too. And you can't "turn over" when it's on every bloody radio station/TV channel!

It is on two channels. When there is a match on one, normal programming is on the other.

Let’s not get carried away, eh?

DolorestheNewt · 17/06/2018 11:44

Surely people who are interested will have a sports channel to watch it on.
Not really. AFAIK, sports channels - SkySports, BTSports, Eurosport - are all part of a subscription package that would cost extra, so we don't have access to anything that isn't on terrestrial.

I wouldn't want to ask radio presenters who are football enthusiasts to avoid discussing the WC or the Euros just because they aren't specifically sports presenters. If I didn't want to hear anything regarding the WC, I put on Radio 3 or 4. Pretty much a football free zone.

BackforGood · 17/06/2018 15:57

Surely people who are interested will have a sports channel to watch it on

er, no. Many, many people only have 'free to view' channels It costs a lot more for sports channels. Are you suggesting only those who can afford it should be able to watch Internationla sports tournaments on TV ? Hmm

StopWhisperingStopShouting · 17/06/2018 17:23

jacques I meant chatter about it is on every radio station, not the match itself.

I don’t have sky back so didn’t realise sports channels had to be paid for. I’n guessing they’re aired on the bbc? So you wouldn’t have to pay for it anyway?
I don’t mind it being played on mainstream telly, it’s just the general chatter I can’t seem to get away from.

You can’t police what people talk about! Do you realise how ridiculous you sound?!

araiwa · 17/06/2018 18:31

Anything else people shouldnt talk about?

Its the biggest tournament of the most popular worlwide game- of course people will talk about it

derxa · 17/06/2018 19:01

And why full coverage of stuff like Russia vs Saudi or Morocco vs Iran that haven't a hope of winning? That shows how much you know about it.

SoyDora · 17/06/2018 19:13

And why full coverage of stuff like Russia vs Saudi or Morocco vs Iran that haven't a hope of winning?

My best friend is Iranian and her and her family are really enjoying the coverage.
They should only show the games of the teams that are most likely to win??
Anyway I thought you said it wasn’t the actual match coverage that bothered you, just people talking about it?

StarbucksSmarterSister · 17/06/2018 20:46

I didn't say match coverage didn't bother me, I said the excess of it did. There are 3 or 4 matches on every day at the moment (I know it will reduce).

As for the teams I mentioned, I look forward to hearing when they get to the quarters or semis and will admit I'm wrong. (And why would I know anything about it when I never watch it?)

StarbucksSmarterSister · 17/06/2018 20:52

You can’t police what people talk about

I don't give a toss what people talk about normally. I do, however, when I can't concentrate on my job or hear what is being said on the phone because they spend half the day loudly giving a running commentary (literally) to each other about the match they are reading about live on the internet.

Thank God their boss is back on Wednesday.

SoyDora · 17/06/2018 20:53

I look forward to hearing when they get to the quarters or semis and will admit I'm wrong

You’re missing the point. It’s irrelevant whether they get to the quarters or semis or not. The fact is that people want to see all the teams playing, not just the ones who are most likely to win.

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 17/06/2018 21:04

Well I wasn’t talking about your job- they should probably just get on with their work. My post was directed at the OP who posted immediately before me.

StopWhisperingStopShouting · 17/06/2018 22:18

Everyone seems to become an expert when talking about football too. Most people who are a fan look like they haven’t run about a field themselves since they were kids.

Why are so many people so invested in a sport that they don’t enjoy playing themselves Confused

OP posts:
ilovesooty · 17/06/2018 22:36

I've never played football in my life but have been a massive fan since childhood.
