To ask how much you pay for a riding lesson?

iveburntthetoast · 16/06/2018 15:09

DD1 and myself have weekly riding lessons, which are £20 for an hour in a group class with anywhere between 3 and 6 riders per class. DH isn’t remotely horsey and gets a bit lightheaded at spending £160 per month on riding. Grin He would like it if I found somewhere cheaper.

AIBU to the think £20 is a good price? It’s an excellent school with lovely ponies, good facilities and great instructors. I think that anywhere cheaper will probably be of a lower standard.

I’d say £20 was good. My lessons are £30 ph and the kids are £22 each. Luckily they aren’t keen so it’s saved us a lot of money. We’re in the suburbs of London though

Mkla1 · 16/06/2018 15:15

Thats very reasonable! I pay £35 for a 30 min group lesson for dd. I have my own horses but will often book a private hour session for myself to work on xyz if we have something coming up which costs £50. I say wherever it is you're riding, you have it good!

helpneededurgently · 16/06/2018 15:17

£21 per hour for a group lesson, have had up to 8 I one and as little as 2. £40 for an hours private lesson.

Str4ngedaysindeed · 16/06/2018 15:19

£25 per half hour private and hour group

Iamclearlyamug · 16/06/2018 15:24

That's a very good price for an hour's group lesson - this is from someone who works in the industry

slippermaiden · 16/06/2018 15:24

£13 for 30 minutes for my daughter, £27 for an hour for me. Daughter goes weekly, I go every 2 or 3 weeks. You won't get much cheaper..... I used to pay £4 as a kid 😀

Singlebutmarried · 16/06/2018 15:25

£25/half hour for one on one.

kittykarate · 16/06/2018 15:27

19.50 for half hour private.

HellenaHandbasket · 16/06/2018 15:28

We pay a special home ed rate of £15 per hour, group lesson with about 3 people. Or £10 for a half hour.

Non home ed is about £25 per hour.

Honeyroar · 16/06/2018 15:28

It sounds a good price, in fact on the cheap side. Is it a reasonable stable with real instructors? (A lot of places nowadays seem to have self proclaimed instructors).

Tell him its small change compared to what it will cost when she gets her own horse, and watch him go white! No seriously, tell him it's exercise, fresh air, teaching her how to be responsible for an animal (if she progresses to learning horse care) and can be a good bargaining tool when she's a teenager (was for me!)!

DontMakeMeShushYou · 16/06/2018 15:31

DD's has recently gone up from £16 to £18 for a 1 hour group lesson but I'm well aware that is very good value for money. £20 sounds very reasonable.

iveburntthetoast · 16/06/2018 15:46

Yes, it’s a very good school with good (qualified) teachers. Very tidy yard, a cross country course in the summer, two indoor schools, and a massive outdoor school that is used for showjumping. It’s £45 for a private (50 minutes) private lesson. We’re in Scotland.

We tried another school that charged £28 and it was abysmal. It was taught by someone very young who left DD1 and 2 other kids going around in circles while she chatted with another older rider

Crazy cheap! My local school charges £40 per hour for shared lessons. It worked out cheaper for me to buy my own!

AForegoneConclusion · 16/06/2018 15:51

We have our own horses and pay £20 an hour for a private on our own horses at our yard. At the local riding school where DD sometimes goes for top up bits and bobs on a different horse (good to have a fresh pair of eyes on a different horse!) it is £60 for a 45 min private lesson and £36.50 for 3/4 group lesson experienced level.

MaryWortleyMontagu · 16/06/2018 15:57

It's very reasonable! In SE London I pay £17 for a half hour group lesson poor £35 for an hour group lesson.

iveburntthetoast · 16/06/2018 16:03

I should add that it used to be £16 for children’s lessons (£20 for adults), but they recently made everything £20. If you have a horse at the yard, lessons have a 50% discount.

In fairness to DH, he never complains about taking DD to the stables and hanging around in the freezing cold. He would happily get DD a pony if we could afford it.

£22 for an hour, like you in a group of 3-6 people of the same ability. I would say £20 is a good deal.

mindutopia · 16/06/2018 16:09

I think for an hour somewhere quality, that sounds reasonable. We pay about £15 I think for a 1/2 hour lesson but we buy in blocks for a discount and have a membership (paid annually and provides discounts on lessons and other activities). I think that it would be £17 per 1/2 hour otherwise.

Gobalmighty · 16/06/2018 16:15

Very good price, I used to teach and 20 years ago at a fairly inexpensive yard the price was £18 for a group lesson. If you trust them, trust their methods and ponies, and generally believe you are as safe as possible (obviously it's not 100% safe), you can't really complain at that price.

theredjellybean · 16/06/2018 16:15

i think that sounds really good value. I pay £34/ 40 min group lesson for dd2 or £48 / 40 min private lesson. She goes to a group as well that is a pony club affiliated session and they get 30-40 min riding in a group ( 6-8) and then an hour of non riding horse management stuff. that costs £48 / session.
But our school is very good, ponies well looked after, closely managed how much work they do, varied types of lessons , two huge indoor arenas, 5 outdoor schools, show jump course, cross coutnry course and dedicated classrooms.

iveburntthetoast · 16/06/2018 16:21

The one thing I wish they could do is to be a pony club Centre. The terrible one I mentioned above is a pony club Centre and DD1 was so excited about going there, but I ruled it out after the abysmal lesson that she had and the overall feel of the place (nobody seemed in charge, some people were just rude, and it all seemed badly organised).

Our current place has its own award/training scheme so DD is doing that.
