To find my neighbour's dog's yapping unbearable

We live in a terraced house and our lovely neighbour's dog is driving me mad. Whenever she goes out her dog starts yapping and keeps at it for hours on end. Even worse, if I come back into the house, the sound of my front door opening and shutting is enough to set the dog off. It's almost unbearable. But here is the problem.

My neighbour's DH recently walked out on her for another woman. She is now left alone with her young school aged DS. I can't bring myself to complain about the dog as that will add yet another misery to her life. In any case, what can she do about it short of getting rid of the dog. As a result I haven't said anything to her. Help!

She might not be aware if it only yaps when she's out. You could have a chat with her and suggest she leave the radio on when she's not at home.

You say the dog is lovely so you like the dog. Are you able to babysit the dog when neighbour goes out?
In the good weather it can go in your garden with your back door open which should shut the mutt up.

Dogs hate being left alone. When I go out I drop the dog off next door (they're retired and they love her). Maybe you could do the same, if it's a nice dog.

I read the post to mean that the neighbour is lovely, not the dog.

There are things she could do.
One of mine barks at the door. She’s much worse if she can see the street so if I’m going out I leave her in a back room or close the curtains and that helps a lot.

I leave mine with the curtains closed and the radio on as one of them yaps if he sees anyone within 10 miles of his manor

It’s the sound of the door which sets this dog off it seems. Sadly that includes our neighbour leaving the house or us coming home.

I always leave the radio on upstairs and downstairs to drown out noises for my dog. Could you suggest that?

We had this problem. Every time we walked up our drive or to our back gate the neighbour's dog barked. I started yelling 'shut up' at it every time and neighbour soon got the message. Although if she's not in she might not realise, so I'd tell her you're being disturbed!

Walking home after work I heard a dog howling. Long drawn out Hound of the Baskervilles stuff. Horrible. Closer to home I realised it was my dog. I'd had no idea she did this and poor neighbours hadn't liked to mention it. Please tell your neighbour. She may not know.
