This is here for traffic...sorry it's not really an AIBU but my lovely kitten has just been spayed. We're in Australia and she was done this morning and picked up at 4.00pm. It's now 11.32 and she seems a bit less groggy but is obviously in pain and a bit unhappy.

We have her in the quietest room with just me here...she's been sleeping in her carrier but wanted to get out and is now sitting like a roast chicken on the hearth...the fire's on and she seems to like the warmth.

But...I plan on sleeping in here tonight. Do I need to put her in the carrier? I don't want to pick her up...if I leave her out of the carrier, she may wander about and hurt herself...aagh...what's best?

Has she got any painkillers?
Recently had one of my fuzzballs done and the vet advised that although it hasn't been standard practice to offer painkillers for after the op- more places are starting to now because of the overwhelming evidence that the cats suffer afterwards too. My fuzzball thankfully didn't seem to need any but we had them on hand just in case.

Other than that, make sure she doesn't have to travel far to access basic needs, and she should be fine soon Grin

Oo and re the carrier- I wouldn't as it'd distress my two far more. I left them to their own devices and made sure they could reach basics (litter tray, water, food, hidden alcove to hide in and nap)

Vet here. If she seems in pain, contact your vet as she may require additional painkillers. She ought to have been sent home with oral medication, but unlikely to be due to start until tomorrow, so not relevant for today.

I wouldn’t bother shutting her in the carrier overnight, it is fine for her to wander about (restrict her to one room though). Make sure she has food and water and litter tray close by (although litter tray not close to other two items, as she probably won’t like that.

No painkillers were given and I was a bit surprised but it was DH who took her ....I would have asked! I can't get to that vet tomorrow but I wonder if my local one will supply?

Thanks Cabbage I think she's definitely happier out of it as she can stand up when she wants to etc...move about a bit.

I will call my local vet in the morning and ask if they can supply some more pain relief. Tricky though as she's not eaten yet....so I can't think how I will give them if she doesn't eat!

You should be able to get painkiller in a liquid form. You just tuck the syringe in their cheek and give it a squirt. My girl was on them for the last size months of her life (palliative care for cancer) and whilst she didn't object (so it couldn't have tasted nasty) she was rewarded with a wee chunk of roast chicken after each dose. She would immediately start yelling for her chicken as soon as the meds were given, so it didn't distress her at all.

My wee girl was poorly after her op too, and it took a few gentle, quiet days for her to recover. After those three or four days, she was right as rain and we had to supervise her to make sure she didn't leap about too much.

Thanks Sociopath...I will call them first thing.
