Son is embarassed by me

I had a meeting near to my son's school yesterday so gave him a lift in (he normally takes the train). I needed to walk past the entrance to school to get where I was going but my son didn't want to walk with me in case anyone saw us. I wasn't going to kiss him goodbye or even hug him but he refused to walk with me and couldn't understand why I got upset. AIBU to feel really sad about this? He is 16.

Its your job to embarassed him😉

My 13yr old will happily walk down the street arm in arm with me my 16yr old not so much so i do it anyway😀("Get off me you crazy woman" is the usual horrified retort😁)

It's quite normal. It will pass.

My mum was really hurt when I started linking arms with her instead of holding hands as we walked along. I was 11, and at secondary school, but the little one of the family and she struggled with it. It's normal for teens to want independence. It doesn't mean anything bad. Do you have any younger children?

😃 My DS used to make me drop him off and collect him around the corner from school so his friends wouldn't see him with me!
Perfectly normal and twenty years later he happily walks down the street with his arm round me 🙂

He is 16.

You've answered your own question. Of course a 16-year-old is going to be embarrassed by his parents. Weren't you?

Standard

Totally normal.
If they are playing up a bit I like to raise my voice and point and say "they're with me" just so everyone knows Wink
