to ask you what your Y6 boys wore to their prom?

Did they go to their prom suited and booted or a more casual look?

I don’t want to fork out on a new suit which will have minimal wear. I’m already sweating at the amount of High School stuff we’ve got to buy shortly.

Problem is I don’t want Ds to feel the odd one out if he just wears a nice pair of trousers, cool shirt and tie, maybe a waistcoat.

I’m posting here for ideas really. I know I’ll probably get some YABU for even asking the question Grin

Thank heavens our school just does a chilled out bbq!!! Def don’t fork out on a suit for an 11yo....surely if they have to be smart just a decent pair of trousers and shirt will do!

Redcrayons · 15/06/2018 11:59

It was a leavers party rather than a prom. It had a rio- carnival theme so they both wore shorts and colourful t-shirts (supposed to be Hawaiian- style shirts but they refused to wear them).

Nobody was suited and booted.

capercaillie · 15/06/2018 12:00

He's going to wear smart-ish shorts and a short-sleeved shirt! Luckily only the girls go for the major dressing up at our prom so most boys will be wearing similar.

RedSkyAtNight · 15/06/2018 12:06

Smartish trousers and a short sleeved shirt.
They had the whole range there though - from shorts and T-shirt to a full blown suit. I'd say the majority had gone wearing something similar to my DS, but I guess you should check with other parents at your school. That said, if he doesn't care, go with what he wants!

Guacamole2506 · 15/06/2018 12:07

Could they not wear black skinny jeans and a smart short sleeved shirt?

DragonsAndCakes · 15/06/2018 12:08

Did they have a similar one last year that you could find photos from?

PyongyangKipperbang · 15/06/2018 12:11

Y6 prom?! When did this become a thing?

Monr0e · 15/06/2018 12:13

Y6, they went straight from school still in uniform to the local pub where parents had hired the function room and the pub put on a simple buffet of beige food and sandwiches. Cost £6.50 per head.

I agree, the idea of buying a suit that may only be worn for a few hours is excessive. Do you know many of the other parents? You would probably be better asking a few of them to gauge what his class mates are wearing.

sparklepops123 · 15/06/2018 12:13

Black jeans (so can get plenty of use out of after), smart shirt and waist coat

adaline · 15/06/2018 12:14

What happened to just having a leavers disco?!

Metoodear · 15/06/2018 12:15

Black trousers waist coat bow tie and white shirt

RedSkyAtNight · 15/06/2018 12:22

In fairness ours was officially a "Y6 Leavers' disco". But everyone called it a Prom.

Titsywoo · 15/06/2018 12:26

Ours is just a leavers party and has a festival theme so DS will wear his uniform of baggy shorts and a baggy tshirt Grin. Suits and stuff for 11 year olds seems very odd.

flowery · 15/06/2018 12:29

Prom? At 11? Good grief. Ours are going to the local pub for pizza after school on the last day along with parents and teachers.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 15/06/2018 12:30

They didn't. There was a leavers party - bbq, bouncy castle, disco. They are 11 not 16. I can't remember what ds1 wore but I know d2 wore shorts and t shorts because, as long as it was warmer than about 10 C, that is what he lived in outside of school from the age of 4 onwards.

Flexoset · 15/06/2018 12:35

Tan chinos, white textured short-sleeved shirt, navy blazer, brown brogues.

Luckily he had this outfit anyway for something because I would not have bought it specially.

They had physical games and a bouncy castle too so if anything he was overdressed.

I would think a pair of trousers and a short-sleeved shirt would be fine. Most Y6 boys probably don't really care about clothes anyway.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 15/06/2018 12:54

We are in Scotland, so for his end-of-primary-school prom, ds3 wore a (hired) kilt - otherwise, I think he would have worn a hired tux - that was his initial intention (we are English and he didn't want to wear a kilt until he found out almost every other boy in his year was wearing one).

If you don't want to hire something, I'd go with smart chinos and a nice shirt - he could start the evening with a tie, and take it off, if he wants to dress up more.

tripYouOut · 15/06/2018 13:27

They wore their formal school uniform for drinks in the auditorium.

There were a couple of private parties around but no kind of prom.

Idontbelieveinthemoon · 15/06/2018 13:29

DS1 left Y6 last summer and dragged me shopping a couple of weeks before. I think he wore a Hollister shirt and some skinny jeans with new Converse. It was definitely a casual sort of thing (although the girls were massively dressed up in ballgowns and all sorts).

Witchend · 15/06/2018 13:33

Ds has already informed me that he'll wear shorts and t-shirt. I offered to dress him up as the greatest Showman so all the girls can fall over him in delight.
He said "yuck" and repeated he's wearing his most comfortable (ie oldest) shorts and t-shirt. Grin

Mulberry72 · 15/06/2018 14:07

DS is Y6 this year, his Prom is at the end of term and the theme is Beach Party.

DS is wearing Ted Baker short sleeved shirt and tailored shorts and then new bright white Nikes and having his hair blue (with fudge type stuff, our friend is a barber who’s doing it for him).

I can’t wait to see him all dressed up!

RockYourSocksOff · 15/06/2018 14:55

I think smart black jeans or trousers and a short sleeve shirt will look ok. Even if Ds went in a jacket it wouldn’t be on long enough to justify the cost.

The problem I have is taking Ds clothes shopping! He would try the first thing on and say that’s fine (even if it really wasn’t Hmm) just to speed things up so that we can finish shopping (far more important things to be doing).

I will speak to other parents and try and gauge what their dc are wearing, although I don’t see many of them these days.

Thanks all.
