AIBU to ask for tips to stave off suspected tonsillitis

Just that really. I’ve taken ibuprofen and am just about to have a lie down. I have a big event this weekend that can’t cancel and I’m feeling ill with a sore throat. I can’t get a dr’s appt but it’s unlikely they’ll prescribe anything. Last winter I had a sore throat that developed into quinsy and a hospital stay and I really don’t want to get that far. I have a 10month, a 3 year old but a very supportive DP.
Would love to hear your suggestions. Thanks. I’m gonna have a lie down now.

Apple cider vinegar with warm water throat gargle..as many times as you manage in a day. It will turn your throat raw, but atleast stall the infection if not reverse it.

Works well as preventative too.

Last weekend my left tonsil was unbelievably sore, painful swallowing and felt like the lump was going down my throat when I swallowed. I gargled with an antiseptic mouthwash and it cleared up by the following day. I hope you stave it off. It is so awful Thanks

I used to get recurring tonsilitis and also ended up hospitalised with quinsy before. It's not nice.

Now as soon as I feel my throat getting sore I cut out all alcohol, cut out sugar as far as possible and eat plenty of veg in soups and stews. I also take good quality Manuka honey and rest whenever possible. Ever since Ive started doing this I haven't had full blown tonsilitis, it's been probably about 4-5 years now after years of getting it 2-3 times a year (still dont know why they wouldn't take them out for me).

Try a salt water gargle.

Darkstar4855 · 14/06/2018 19:39

Avoid alcohol. If I’ve got a niggling cold/sore throat and have a drink (or several) I will always cone down with a full on streaming chest cold the next door.

My mum swears by gargling with dilute TCP (there’s instructions on the bottle and it doesn’t taste as bad as you might think) to ward it off at an early stage.

Gargle with disolvable aspirin, was told this by my gp it’s amzing, works every time.

LloydColeandtheCoconuts · 14/06/2018 19:48

Thanks for your tips. Have just gargled salted water and sent DP for aspirin.

Gargle with dilute TCP. I'm a serial tonsillitis sufferer and have also had quinsy. The TCP thing has stopped incipient tonsil issues a couple of times, I think. Other times it failed though. Worth a try though. It is rank though, I warn you.

Bergamot essential oil. It's in Earl Grey Tea.
I had recurring tonsillitis. They used to bleed, and I had an automatic reissued prescription for Amoxicillin, which gave me thrush. Angry
I started gargling with Bergamot in a glass of water. It was gone in 24 hours. I use it every time now.
My Mum laughed at it. She is now a convert.
It works!
I haven't had it in years now.

Honey and lemon.
Codine (neurofen plus) or dissolvable cocodamol.
One can only fat coke
Chicken and veg soup
I get it about 4
Times a year, always when I’m run down, but it used to be 10 times!

Gargle with Listerine. I used to suffer about three times a year, but manage to keep in to one bout per 18 months - 2 years when I feel it pending.
