To get annoyed by people that talk in the sauna

I've just joined a gym that has a pool and sauna & steam rooms.

Last week I went in the steam room after a swim, was in there on my own, then two men came in and started talking fairly loudly, considering it is supposed to be a relaxing atmosphere.

After a while, I went in the sauna and they came in there too, still talking.

I didn't think much of it and thought it must just be these two rude people but each time I have been, there are always men talking rubbish in the sauna & steam.

AIBU to expect people to use these areas for relaxation/meditation/contemplation/whatever and if they really have to, to use their quite voices? It's hard to chill when people are talking nonsense like they are in their own front room.

I don't think there are any women only sessions.

Yanbu at all Eliza9917. I have given up my health centre membership for this very reason. Friends sitting talking quietly in the sauna fine. But that is NOT what happens at all. Mine was constantly full of older men talking really loudly. Topics limited to: boasting about their holidays; cars; jobs; home improvements; football teams. There would also be frequent swearing and I’m not talking the odd ‘bloody’ level cursing but ‘f’ing and ‘c’ing. To add insult to injury I was there paying full membership of £40+ per month whilst the Mercedes-driving pensioners pay £55 a year!!! To sit ruining my sauna on the only 2 x hour slots I could get away from work, house and kids to ‘relax’. I’m 100% on your side OP. Ps I also caught them shaving in the steam room, which is beyond disgusting.

Definitely not unreasonable, I could have written this post myself. Firstly I had to leave the pool because someone was swimming whilst wearing so much Chanel perfume that I could taste it and it was making me heave, then I went in the jacuzzi where 4 blokes followed me in and started talking loudly about football, then I went in the sauna where 3 people were having a loud conversation about the traffic problems on the way to the gym, so all in all not a very relaxing visit!

Yanbu.

I want to relax in a sauna/steamroom not be disturbed by incessant chatter about mostly crap.

Doobigetta · 14/06/2018 21:48

A couple of women chatting to each other- absolutely fine.

One middle aged man holding forth to everyone in the sauna, with special extra bits of performance for the ladies- should be a hanging offence.

YANBU

I also like peace and quiet in the spa. Try going on a Sunday morning when these loud people are hungover.

For me it's a YANBU. I was in a posh one in central London (visiting dsis) on a Saturday and some women came in and started talking loudly about work. Ffs. I came to not think about that.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 14/06/2018 21:58

YADNBU.

My gym even has a sign saying that people may be using the steam room/sauna for quiet time and that this should be respected. Except that it isn't. I've even seen someone in there on their phone Hmm

Blackbirdblue30 · 14/06/2018 22:03

Yanbu. Mine has older men talking loudly like they're in their own house, not where other people want to relax. There is also sometimes a few macho men who do stretches with big grunts and so on. It's annoying.

@femidom12 libraries haven't been quiet spaces for YEARS...

Oh now that's just fucking vile.

I think the most you can get away with is a hair mask, anything else is juts minging.
