To have befriended this bird?

I live right in the middle of a market town just off the main square and have a huge rooftop terrace.

I noticed this beautiful pigeon the other day, dont know if the photo does it justice but its a beautiful cream colour. It also has "wristbands" on its feet.

This morning I fed it some bread and it ate out of my hand! It appears to enjoy sauntering around my terrace.

AIBU to have it as a semi feral pet? What can i put out for it (im assuming bread isnt great)? Or is that irresponsible?

They like a small box to rest in, take a look online at photos. They also like to rest high up, will happily sleep on top of a cupboard if they get the chance, or a curtain pole, don't ask me how I know.

A nesting bowl/basket might be needed if she is in fact a she, and you might find you have a pair in due course.

Have a look at camp the pigeon on instagram / Facebook etc its the story of a family that found an egg.

PanPanPanPing · 14/06/2018 17:32

Maybe it's worth moving Praline's cardboard box to between those two wooden boxes (?) on your patio and underneath that garden chair, as you're expecting inclement weather?

I’m such a clutz

I read the OP as ‘I’ve beheaded...’

I blame the back to back crime documentaries I’ve been recently watching.....Wine

Heartbroken! I went out and when I got back this evening she was gone. Hopefully I will see her tomorrow? Maybe she has a night spot she goes to?

I had Gazzie for a while in the end and was gutted when she was finally released! She may come back Tangled as she knows you're a source of food and shelter. Fingers crossed! Or she may have spied some wild pigeons and gone off with them...but keep us posted!

When I still lived in the family home feral/racing pigeons and rock doves were regular visitors. It started with about a dozen grimy, emaciated birds perching on the rooftop. I began to supply them with Economy Pigeon Mix (from The Blue Barn) and daily bathing and drinking water. The population grew from a small number of waifs and strays to a maximum of forty-eight well-fed, round and clean pigeons.

In the summer they took full advantage of the hose sprinkler for a bath and chill-out on the lawn in the late afternoon sunshine.

It came to an end when our green-fingered neighbours complained about the state of their vegetable seedlings. A pity.

OP. I can’t continue until I know just how you are pronouncing Nougats name....

Nugget? Or Noo-gar?

MabelFurball · 14/06/2018 21:48

@FloControl
How sweet!!

I have a feeling she'll be back. I'm pretty sure I have seen her around once or twice before, I noticed her because she's much lighter than a normal pigeon and more brazen, think it was last week I saw her poke her head over the roof. So I'm confident she'll be back. DP has gone from saying if she's still around this weekend shes going in a stew, to "I'll make her a wood box on Saturday".

I’m amazed your cats don’t leap off the catio. The intelligence is far superior to any of mine who’d forget themselves and leap over and find themselves on the ground pretty sharpish. They are not the brightest though bless them.

We found a banded homing pigeon once in our garage after a thunderstorm and were informed that if it can't find its own way home, the owner won't want it back.
After spending about a month with us (and becoming good friends with our tomcat) it flew away one fine morning.

Freaklikemeee · 14/06/2018 22:59

He was called Homer.

Tangled59 · 15/06/2018 06:30

😁 Homer was an excellent choice of name in many ways!!!

Praline was waiting for me this morning when I stepped outside.

Aw this thread has cheered me right up! What a beautiful bird (and I'm not exactly a bird lover!) Hope Praline enjoys her new home.

LizzieLongToes · 15/06/2018 06:40

Such a lovely thread.

Hope Praline isn't being tempted by the 'basic bitch' pigeons!!😂

harshbuttrue1980 · 15/06/2018 06:47

Definitely don't contact the owner. They have no use for pigeons who get lost and will wring his neck. He's beautiful! Pigeons go feral easily and will survive wild and free.

GlitteryFluff · 15/06/2018 06:52

Ah glad praline came back

TheSassyAssassin · 15/06/2018 06:53

Morning Tangled Brew, morning Praline Wink

Tangled59 · 15/06/2018 06:54

@TheSassyAssassin
doffs farmer cap

Mornin' sassy.

So new diet for Praline will be uncooked rice and defrosted peas. Sound good?

I love wild birds any kind. I have two seagull friends who have been raising their chicks on my roof for the last 10 years. We are very good friends now and they even bring their chicks to see me when they can fly. I can even stroke the female.

Tangled59 · 15/06/2018 06:58

@madcatladyforever
Thats lovely. I miss the seagulls from living in Brighton. Such characters. The sound of gulls always makes me nostalgic. Although they can be scary fuckers at times...
