Re school pro-kick challenge

Our school takes part in this every year. It’s meant to be a fun challenge that’s raises a bit of money to charity but because they give a free football to children who raise £25 or more it becomes the source of arguments in our house. DS is insistent we should sponsor him and DD unreasonable amounts of money so that they can both get footballs. We try to be really conscious of where we donate money but the info leaflet about the event was really unclear where the money goes. If he needs/wants a football we’d rather just buy one. Anyway after many tears we’ve managed to explain this and all is well but I still feel grumpy about school getting involved in things like this that put parents under pressure to raise money for unclear causes. AIBU?

I got this from the Sports Connections Foundation which organises ProKick

Money raised from ProKick helps to fund the many other activities we do here at SCF. From granting Sporting Wishes for children with life limiting illnesses to running our 'Inspire Through Sport' programmes for disadvantaged children and also contributing towards the cost of running an orphanage in Burkina Faso under our 'Inspire Through Sport International

It's pretty clear...

OP. I agree with you on balance.
What I particularly don't like about these schemes is calling it 'sponsoring' rather than just be clear it is donating. I prefer sponsoring to require some level of effort.

Pro-Kick, if my memory serves me correctly, gets all the children to kick a football to see how hard they can kick it. There is no other 'effort' involved.
All the children get a go and have fun even if they haven't raised any money.

I have no beef against the causes they support, just don't like the marketing and spin.

It should be
"School, we are doing this because it is fun for the children and we get a cut of the takings. Please donate."
"Organisation: We are doing this because it raises money for a good cause. We encourage donations by giving rewards to children who raise more. Please donate."
