Thought it wold be a good idea...as we have lots of family and friends coming over to our house visit for the afternoon and I dont want to spend my time tidying up when i could be with all of them.

Im not trying to make some sort of impression, just think that it makes sense.

and it would only be for say the afternoon, Keeping the buffet fresh, serving drinks, clearing up dishes, glasses etc and generally tidying up etc.

DH thinks im being a complete snob??

We've done the 1st Holy Commumion twice; first time , as DD1's favourite meal is fish and chips we went to a posh seafood restaurant and had the 6 pound lunch menu (arranged beforehand)- fish and chips for little ones, salmon and mussels for the rest.
I was delighted as I really wanted to be enjoying her company and guests, not faffing around. We then went back home for cake and champagne.
Next time, a fortnight ago, DD2 wanted to be at home and have her favourite food, egg sandwiches. I prepared a finger food buffet the day before and that morning, so no fussing around with cutlery and whipped the cling film off when we got back home-(classsy!)
Cost-wise there wasn't much difference and in the end I felt I spent both days enjoying guests and DDs. But we had fewer than 20 guests each time. We went to a christening with caterers and an entertainer for the 'pesky' kids; it felt a bit corporate.

It definitely depends on how helpful your rellies are likely to be. I knew when DS was baptised that the PILs would be desperate to help. And they were - they turned my Costco haul into a classy buffet AND did huge amounts of clearing up afterwards.

I know that with the DB, they'll want to have fun with DS, so we're going to eat out. I really can't see how it's different paying somebody to wait on in your house, to paying somebody to wait on in a restaurant. Except that the waiters in your own house get to keep more of the money.
