Adult ADHD referral. Come and guess how long the wait is?

My GP has referred me to the relevant folk for an assessment for ADHD.
Just had a call from my surgery telling me the waiting list is running at 2 years!!!! Shock

We’re skint but I’m seriously contemplating going private. It’s really affecting my everyday life and I think I’ll ‘self destruct’ if nothing changes soon.

Has anyone else experience of seeing a private provider regarding adult ADHD?

My Dc was referred for ados at 9, dx at 11 and she's had a year wait as she's suicidal now, the support services we are being referred to are charities such as barnardos.

pippy thankfully the Nice guidelines are changing with regards to ADs.

That's good. Never had them, just seem to be handed out easily whereas my GP is refusing to prescribe ADHD meds.

@SweetCheeks1980 my DP has ADHD and it is horrific at times. A diagnosis will help him access support/medication to significantly increase his wellbeing (and mine).

OP my DP has had a similar experience except the GP refused to even refer him saying that it would have been picked up at school Hmm. He's clearly got ADHD and we are considering private - medication and such like, if he's offered it would be a huge expense - although, at this stage we are willing to pay it.

Flowers to everyone going through similar.

Just so you know, your GP can't prescribe ADHD meds except under the supervision of a consultant. Private or NHS.

Just to say with my now adult son we had regular contact with the CCG who "insisted" that his GP prescribed his ADHD medication as there was no private or NHS consultant for adults in our area. They did this as they had a duty of care, and obviously it was not my son's fault there was nowhere for him to be referred to. Until we found a private consultant for him, the CCG contacted the GP surgery on a monthly basis, who would then contact the GP who would issue the prescription. This went on for about two years and the CCG were incredibly supportive, knowing that without the medication my son was unable to function in society. The CCG also told us that they were doing the same for other adult ADHD sufferers.

pippylou Not sure of your exact situation, but if you wish to contact me privately I can run you through how we managed to get out GP to prescribe the medication my adult son needed, and how eventually were able to find a consultant specialising in adult ADHD. Happy to help if you need it.

helford what happened in the 8 years. Was he able to continue medication or was he never on it?

Shrinkwrap. For several years my son continued on the dose of medication he was on when he last saw the paediatric consultant in ADHD. We knew it desperately needed tweeking, but it was at least able to give him some sort of productive life. After some years the GP refused to prescribe anymore and we contacted the CCG who were very helpful and understanding. They would then contact our GP surgery on a monthly basis and insist they write a prescription for my son. This continued until we were able to find a adult consultant who we now deal with directly. (That's the short version of the story anyway).
