This morning my 14 year old was asked to lock the back door before we left, he came out of the house and said that he'd done it so I asked if he was sure - he snapped that I didn't need to check and he'd done it.

I've just got home and the door is unlocked, I'm thinking of saying he can't use the laptop, mobile and TV for 24 hours to give him an idea of what it'd be like if somebody had come in and stolen them.

AIBU?

I think it's a fair punishment. Especially given you asked him specifically and he lied.

toffeepumpkins · 12/06/2018 13:22

I think he probably forgot rather than lied but yes, that's a factor in me thinking of doing that.

Well I think it will serve as a useful reminder for him for next time! It's certainly not overly harsh.

theluggageslegs · 12/06/2018 13:26

Fair enough under the circumstances. Even if he had forgotten he could have said so when you checked.

Andrewofgg · 12/06/2018 13:47

Yes. Punishment for telling the lie and being rude - not for being careless.

YANBU. Unless he has amnesia, he didn’t forget whether he’d locked it or not when you asked seconds later and if he was at all unsure, he should’ve gone to check.

Mousefunky · 12/06/2018 13:54

Oh and let him know he put his precious laptop and TV at risk doing it.
