Dsis is 7 weeks pregnant with her first child and she is 43. We met with Dm recently and both of them are convinced she is having twins or triplets - dsis is sure she is having triplets. She hasn't had fertility treatment.
I said this is unlikely for most couples but especially for her due to her age and that she conceived without help and they were disappointed that I'm not "on-board" with their prediction. Dsis said that older women are in fact more likely to have triplets even without fertility treatment as more eggs get released each month. I said "Wow, I didn't know that! Can't wait for the scan."
Is this true? What are the chances of her having triplets? I hope her hunch is right, but it just seems a bit on the far-fetched side and I really don't want her to be disappointed if the scan reveals "just" the one baby...

It is true that older women are more likely to have multiples due to erratic egg release, but I don't know how likely it is - I'd agree a single baby is more likely. However people do get accurate senses they are having multiples, you never know. It's probably more likely wishful thinking to get a ready made whole family at 43.

I think I'd want to be younger than 43 if I had triplets!

Just indulge her for now - it sounds as though she's reading books and taking just what she wants from them, but there's no harm done. A "Ohhh that would be nice!" will do.

Caribou58 · 12/06/2018 10:33

What evidence does she have for this? I'm thinking that at 7 weeks there won't be any...

It's true that older women are more likely to have multiples.

I guess it's nature's last hurrah.

Just indulge her, let her have fun, where's the harm?

I dreamed I was having triplets throughout. Really clear dreams, 2 boys who were identical twins and healthy, and a girl who was smaller and struggling. Wouldn’t have surprised me a bit to find out I was having triplets but it wasn’t the case.

No evidence - just a feeling. I didn't mention likelihood again as I didn't want to be unsupportive to my pregnant sister, and said how exciting it all was. And it is! I can't wait to be an aunt, whether it's to one or eight children.

The thing is that if this is her first and much-wanted baby, you're going to get a lot of this for the next nine months, and then there'll be the discovery that her child is actually a genius! I'd just let her get on with it and enjoy her excitement. I hope all goes well for her.

I've heard of twins being more common but not triplets.

There are a lot of fraternal twins in my family and I was 37 when I got pregnant, I sighed with relief when I found out I was pregnant with only one baby.

I don't understand why people are so obsessed with the idea of a multiple birth, I guess they just want to be "special".
