To ask what to do with the live mouse I caught?

Shambu · 12/06/2018 09:09

Caught him in a humane trap with food.

If I put him at the end of the garden he will just come straight back.

But if I release him on the local common, he will not likely survive.

WWYD?

you are supposed to release them within 100 yards of the house. They can then find their nest. Any further and they will die. In reality there are 100s of mice out there so no point driving miles away anyway.

liz70 · 12/06/2018 09:33

I don't advocate keeping Mousey as a pet. But...if you do, bear in mind that you will have to deflea, as the buggers will almost certainly be present. Plus use a pair of sturdy gloves to get Mousey used to being handled. But seriously, it's not a great idea.

x2boys · 12/06/2018 09:35

its just not true that if you find one mouse there are loads it depends on where you live, we lived near fields and a river and used to get the odd field mouse at winter , that is a very chubby mouse though.

tutufruiti · 12/06/2018 09:37

Definitely not a "he". Congratulations on the pregnant mouse 😂

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 12/06/2018 09:39

OMG imagine the tiny babies. I want one, no scratch that I want them all. squeeeeee

Fruitcorner123 · 12/06/2018 09:41

If you think it is pregnant I would give the rspca a call and get some advice.

HungerOfThePine · 12/06/2018 09:41

I think it's a pointless exercise releasing it miles away the rest of its family are still about so it won't solve the mouse problem but hopefully this one will have a long memory and decide to go somewhere else for food.
If my cat catches a mouse I just release them back into the garden.

I don't actually have a mouse problem though just a cat oneGrin.

Don't tell me to keep him. 🙈 I already have difficulty seeing him as vermin and not a friend...

HungerOfThePine · 12/06/2018 09:42

Also think it's cruel to keep it as a pet, my ex caught a mouse and kept it, it died within a few days I felt sorry for the poor thing.

Shambu · 12/06/2018 09:42

His/her/their nest is behind my dishwasher it turns out.

He's going to die wherever you leave him. He won't survive without his family.

Snap traps are kinder in the long run.

Glue traps are the devil's creation.

Shambu · 12/06/2018 09:43

If I put it in the garden it will simply run straight back in. I'm in London, the garden's not that big.

How many are there. Any babies

Shambu · 12/06/2018 09:44

I'm not sure that he's married? I've only ever seen him, no sign of a family.

anotherangel2 · 12/06/2018 09:45

I did not have any issues with mice until my cat moved in. He often brings in live ones and get bored and lets them run around.

Gottokondo · 12/06/2018 09:47

I still think that chubby is up the duff. Maybe call for advise as said upthread.

Gottokondo · 12/06/2018 09:51

Next time get a trap that kills. So much easier after the guilty cry and the looking for gloves to handle the recently deceased because eeeew and then feeling like you just got your one way ticket to hell.

NotTheMrMenAgain · 12/06/2018 09:54

Aww, wonder how many Chubby Juniors you'll get.....might end up with a mouse metropolis in your house, that's how these things start Grin

midnightmisssuki · 12/06/2018 09:55

That’s a big mouse. Humane traps are really for us to feel better about not killing the animal..... chances are one you release it they die anyway. We did that years ago - caught two, mickey and Minnie. Released them. Then was told they would die. We use snap traps now, it’s awful but it’s the most kind (we have a few!)

bicback · 12/06/2018 09:57

please don't hurt him op, well done for a kinder trap. simple really, take him further away and release him in a wood

mummymeister · 12/06/2018 09:57

I would release in your back garden and buy a snapback trap so that the next time you catch her she dies quickly.

hopefully this will be before she gives birth and you are over run not just by them but by the wee smell that they give off.

she isn't a pet. she is a wild animal. she will chew through your dishwasher wire or others in the house. release and buy a proper trap because the humane ones certainly aren't. releasing miles away from home and they starve to death in unfamiliar surroundings.

FlyMaybe · 12/06/2018 09:58

Awww that's a wood mouse. We have one that lives in our shed. Very cute. Please don't kill it... not helpful, I know...

Shambu · 12/06/2018 10:06

releasing miles away from home and they starve to death in unfamiliar surroundings.

😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

OP posts:
UpstartCrow · 12/06/2018 10:07

You have to let it go in case its a female with babies, they will be starving in the nest while you dither about.

Either use a breakneck trap or dont use one at all.

Shambu · 12/06/2018 10:11

I've found its nest, no babies.

I'm not dithering I'm waiting for a friend with a car to arrive.
