Police have been and gone but I'm here on my own with 3 little kids and I'm too scared to sleep.
I sent my (stbx)in-laws away home and I just need someone to chat to cause I'm hearing Every. Single. Noise.

Don't think I'll ever sleep again.

The good thing is that they aren't going to come back.

Wouldn't it have been best for your In-Laws to stay?

3littlebadgers · 12/06/2018 02:46

Oh darling it must have been terrifying. Are the children ok? Brew

SpringtimeSun · 12/06/2018 02:50

Luckily the children didn't even wake up and I'm so glad.
I'm not sure them staying would have helped. Who knows.....I did the very British thing of saying 'No no I'll be ok'

Well you will be, when you get over the shock and your brain starts to settle down and you can think rationally again.

ThatchersCold · 12/06/2018 02:59

This has happened to me (except they did actually get into my house, I heard someone coming through the back door and I immediately jumped out of bed, grabbed my dressing gown and flew downstairs, by which time they’d gone out of the front door - both doors were wide open). It’s terrifying. I literally didn’t stop shaking all night.

You probably won’t get much sleep tonight, and you’ll be on edge from now on at night I would imagine. The best thing you can do is do whatever you can to improve your home security which will make you feel safer - CCTV, security lights, extra locks/bolts etc.

Poor you, it’s a horrible thing to go through.

SpringtimeSun · 12/06/2018 03:03

God, you're braver than me Thatcher!!!!

They were trying to get in through my Conservatory door which (due to quirky layout of a very old bungalow) is the room next to our bedrooms. You have to go through the conservatory to access the rest of the house.
I just lay in bed absolutely petrified and dialed 999.

I just lay in bed absolutely petrified and dialed 999.

Which absolutely the best thing to do and what the police advise. My job involves sleeping over sometimes at premises that are more likely to be a target, and that is what I was trained to do. "Get safe, stay safe, call 999". You did the right thing.

thebewilderness · 12/06/2018 03:14

You will be ready to sleep when the kids get up. Call the in Laws back then so you can take a nap.
I am so sorry they did this to you.

SpringtimeSun · 12/06/2018 03:16

My home is definitely more likely to be targeted. It's attached to my Post Office. I just never thought it would actually happen.

I’m not sure about brave really, you know in horror movies when a woman is home alone and she hears someone breaking into her house, and she goes to see who it was and you think ‘what are you doing, you daft bint, go and hide in a wardrobe or something!!’. But I was that daft bint, it was an instinctive thing, it was just me and the DCs in the house and I guess I just went into protective mode and didn’t even really think, it all happened so quickly. The sun will be coming up before too long and you’ll start to feel safer then Flowers.

((((((Huge Hugs))))))) Flowers Gin Chocolate

Oddbutnotodd · 12/06/2018 03:27

Sorry this has happened to you. Have something soothing to drink like hot chocolate. Try listening to a podcast or even a sleep meditation on YouTube to help relax you. Hope you manage to get some sleep. 💐

celticmissey · 12/06/2018 03:34

Bless you! ring the police back on 101 tomorrow and ask for a crime prevention officer to visit you. They can give you some good security advice and measures to deter any potential burglars - sometimes they will have equipment they may be able to provide free - such as intense security lighting etc. A beware of the dog sign is sometimes an easy sign to put in relevant places (even if you don't have a dog). You can also get an alarm which is linked to a central monitoring station you can activate in an emergency to get help. Being attached to a Post Office may have played a part but there are lots of little things you could do security wise to put off a burglar considering trying to burgle like CCTV cameras, security lighting and better locks etc. Well done you did exactly the right thing....

SpringtimeSun · 12/06/2018 03:39

Yeah the PO is covered by lots of these deterrents but the house isn't. I'm definitely going to need to think about it now.
I just never thought it would happen. The way they tried it has always been my worst nightmare.
I feel better now it's getting light but sleep still seems a long way away.

AjasLipstick · 12/06/2018 04:35

Conservatory doors are notorious weak spots. Can you afford a burglar alarm? Burglars really don't want to get caught so will avoid certain properties.

Is your property easy to access from the back? What's the front look like? Lots of trees or bushes?

Are you detatched? Sorry to ask so many questions!

Make sure you talk to your neighbours OP....it can really help if everyone's aware.

freakinbananaspiders · 12/06/2018 04:52

Do you have sash jammers on your conservatory doors? If not get them from a diy shop and fit today. Easiest and cheapest way to secure conservatory doors. I made my husband put them on ours even though we have the new type very secure doors.

Mateko · 25/06/2018 17:46

The weakest spot in a conservatory is not the door but the roof. The roof panels are placed from the outside. So remove the seals , lift the glass and you are in.
