Just found out I am being made redundant after maternity leave, not that fussed as I wasnt really happy there anyway!

My career is HR however I would be open to doing anything if it meant working for myself!

Does anyone have any ideas that I could potentially set up for £1.5k ?

What do you like doing? Do you want to stay in HR? Do you want to work from home? What hours do you want to keep?

It's almost certainly doable. But you need to start asking yourself some questions and making some lists!

melissasummerfield · 11/06/2018 20:34

I have considered both a food based business ( I love food, cooking and eating Grin)

I have also looked into starting a plus size tshirts business but i literally cannot find where you order the blank tshirts!

Massive demand for gardeners. I started a grounds maintenance business after I got fed up working for numptys, although it was my career anyway. Totally possible to start grass cutting for £1500. Second hand mower and strimmer, second hand trailer, can or estate car. Chap who does my mum's grass (I'm too pregnant now) is doing 60 gardens a week at £20 a time. I'm in my third year but trying to take it down the contracting route, as it's a lot more money for fewer days out the house away from kids. Good luck! Exciting times!

Buy old furniture, dismantle it and sell the parts. Sell sponges made of brick. Open a brothel. Cut up apples and sell the slices. Invent an alarm clock that changes time.

Hope you do well OP ☺the plus size t-shirt business sounds good ☺

Trumpton · 12/06/2018 06:52

Fruit of the Loom t shirts are good quality and go to size 24 .

melissasummerfield · 12/06/2018 07:05

@notsodimwit thank you!

@trumpton thank you for the reply, Im looking for sizes 18 to 30 in a light cotton bit they need to be cut longer than the fruit of the loom ones as having been bigger myself they come up too short if you have a belly!

I think i would need to go to a manufacturer which is where im struggling as a lot of them are abroad...

Can you find someone to make the t-shirts to your spec? I'm an experienced machinist looking for work from home by the way....(hint hint)

If you don’t teally have much of an idea of what area you even want to work in plus fall at the first hurdle like sourcing T shirts- can I respectfully suggest you aren’t ready to be running your own business.

BitOutOfPractice · 12/06/2018 07:14

Virtual PA?

HR Consultant?

icelollycraving · 12/06/2018 07:17

Your first post wasn’t rude Eastmids however the second was.
Op, decide on what kind of business you are set on, as your ideas seem pretty vague.

SinkGirl · 12/06/2018 07:17

Go for hand produced in the U.K., or go the opposite direction and look up t shirt suppliers on alibaba and contact several.

I started a business for £1k - I started a business teaching cake decorating classes and just about managed to buy all the equipment I needed, although had to add more as I added more classes. Luckily DH is a web developer so he built me a booking website for nothing as that would have cost a fortune.

BinG0wings123 · 12/06/2018 07:18

@Eastmidsmummy Christ, that’s a twatty thing to say.

Can someone explain the t shirt thing to me. Whats op doing with them. Cooking them? She mentioned she liked cooking and wanted to source t shirts. Have i missed something. Sorry had to call an ambulance out for my baby last night. All ok now. Just hating getting half a story and now imaging op colking up t shirts.

KittyVonCatsworth · 12/06/2018 07:59

I think you’d struggle to start a food based business on that. I’m thinking about doing the same and looking at Environmental Health requirements for food prep areas, training in food hygiene, initial outlay costs etc could easily wipe out 1.5k.

Good luck in whatever you decide to do x

Tartsamazeballs · 12/06/2018 08:01

That was about the start up costs for my dog walking biz- £1k van, £100 stickers for van, £300 crates, £100 insurance (year), £50 on hoodies/polo shirts.

Thanks for all the nice / useful replies...

I really dont know what the mentality is of a person who clicks on a thread to just be unpleasant or rude, mumsnet can be such an ugly place at times.

The tanker idea sounds great OP. I'm a size 20 and would love some long T-shirts with an alone fit with fantastic patterns etc
