So me and OH were having a conversation earlier about his phone and he told me that he and his friend made a comment about being sponsored by a tool company, when he got home he went onto YouTube and there, in black and white, was a video headed "how is it to be sponsored by tool company". I said it was a coincidence although I know there have been questions surrounding Alexa listening in to conversations. He has literally just opened YouTube again and the suggested video was "does Google listen to my conversations?". I'm a little freaked by this but is it just coincidence? Or do I need to switch my phone to protect my privacy??

I couldn’t tell you what ads I’ve noticed recently. It’s just coincidence. Because it’s something you’ve been commenting on you notice the advert more. It’s like when you’re pregnant and you notice all the pregnant people around that you wouldn’t notice normally.
Plus adverts are designed to effect your subconscious. He probably saw an ad for tool sponsorship but didn’t register it. Talked about it with a mate and you and then noticed the advert as it was on his mind. Not sone creepy big brother shit just clever advertising!

@Ashaysayay

More fool you.

Eh? I work in this exact field as a senior dev for one of the Companies regularly mentioned.

no I don't want to be recorded or to even contemplate the possibility of it.

And you are not being recorded, is it doable yes, is it cost effective, not a chance, when there is already a large online footprint that is way more accurate for buying/viewing/interests etc

Smartphones don’t listen in to your conversation.

Yes they do. It’s common knowledge that they do and it’s the technology on which Alexa et al are based on. It’s just not made explicitly clear. I know someone that works for one of the companies heading up a team that listens in extracting key words.

It’s easy to avoid, you don’t allow access to the microphone for apps on your phone and you don’t buy Alexa etc.
