To think the Buckingham Palace balcony may not be safe for children

I was looking at the pictures of George and Charlotte on the balcony and although they are very cute it made me nervous. I have kids of a similar age, I am quite a cautious person so maybe it's silly but I would be worried about them falling.

I thought the same op.

It seems barely crotch height on the adults. I'd be keeping my hand on young dc tbh.

TheDropBear · 11/06/2018 01:18

On Will and Kate's wedding when everyone was on the balcony Camilla lifted up one of the bridesmaids to see and you can see Charles tell her to stop. I like to think he was telling her not to do a Michael Jackson

Sparklesocks · 11/06/2018 02:33

Cmon OP, you can’t really think you know better than the actual staff whose job it is to make sure everything is safe and risk assessed correctly?

felldownarabbithole · 11/06/2018 02:39

lol I have had that thought myself

But I'm fairly confident it's covered and the royals probably hold the same level of panic over their DC as me so it's pretty unlikely any harm will come to them

NaughtToThreeSadOnions · 11/06/2018 03:12

You do realise it seems low cos the children are standing on benches, as demostrated by charlottes little tumble.

Its no different to children goimg out on hotel balcony. Children George, Savanah and Islas age are quite able to understand the instruction don't lean over, in fact im pretty sure Charlotte can understand be careful so you dont fall. When she wasnt she was carried in Catherines arms.

As pp have said it will be covered in risk assements/insurance etc. Its clearly well supervised did you see how quickly catherine moved to catch charlotte.

Itchytights · 11/06/2018 03:22

Clearly you are very bored.

cistersofterfy · 11/06/2018 03:27

There'll be a big invisible net triggered by secret service agents, you can count on it.

DontCallMeCharlotte · 11/06/2018 06:43

I noticed one little boy in a sailor suit (no idea who he belonged to!) was left all by himself on the balcony at one point which was mildly surprising.

ShatnersBassoon · 11/06/2018 06:52

They don't seem the type of kids to be climbing around, or daring each other to go out on gran's balcony later on when nobody is there.

Of all the things to have playing on your mind, the safety of some of the most guarded children in the world seems a bit overinvested.

springydaff · 11/06/2018 07:08

But the Royals have a disdain for the usual concerns - along the lines that they're anointed and things like that don't happen to them.

I agree op, it's a bit worrying.

Slartybartfast · 11/06/2018 07:10

I think you ought to let them know op

CaramelEmporium · 11/06/2018 07:10

I didn’t think about the kids but I did think on the recent pics that it looked low, mid thigh height on Kate.

megletthesecond · 11/06/2018 07:13

I worry about this when I see them up there too Blush, one of my dc's had form for trying to do stupid things.

Maybe they've tethered them with reins?

PolkerrisBeach · 11/06/2018 07:21

I have yet to see anyone fall from the balcony.

OhMyGodTheyKilledKenny · 11/06/2018 07:26

Building regs would never allow you to build it that low theses days!

I would have thought Buckingham Palace would have their own H&S advisor who would be tutting loudly at it

Starlighter · 11/06/2018 07:28

I’d never noticed that before!

We had a balcony on holiday and I had a chat to the kids about it as I was worried one of them would climb up and lean over, but It wasn’t that low though! It would make me a bit nervous with young children.

pissedonatrain · 11/06/2018 07:31

lol not to worry. Many kids have stood on that balcony and they haven't lost any yet!

Eastpoint · 11/06/2018 07:32

I’ve been in the room behind the balcony (work) and we commented to the members of the royal household we were with on how low the front of the balcony is. The balcony is also much narrower than you’d think, we were really surprised.

GorgonLondon · 11/06/2018 07:34

I've thought this too! I really hate heights where the barrier is too low, especially since having kids. Fine if there's a high barrier, or a transparent window

Evanna13 · 11/06/2018 07:38

Obviously nobody has fallen from the balcony in the past, obviously it's unlikely to happen. The kids are very well behaved and I am sure they have been warned not to lean over the edge. I do not know better than the security staff. I just saw the picture and it made me nervous. The balcony is high, the ledge is low.

I thought the same op looking at the pics on Saturday , if I was up there with my kids I'd be keeping a hand on them at all times !

catherinedevalois · 11/06/2018 07:48

There's a huge window sitting on top of the balcony so there's no way they can fall out. It's slightly tinted as well to make all the royals look healthy.

noblegiraffe · 11/06/2018 07:50

They have giant trampolines set up under the balcony so if anyone falls off they can bounce right back up. That’s how Philip did his hip in.

LifeBeginsAtGin · 11/06/2018 07:53

I thought the same thing. I think it was Peter Philips daughter, Savannah, who was jumping up at the balcony.

halcyondays · 11/06/2018 07:53

I have to admit, when watching it , I did see one or two of them leaning over a bit and found myself shouting "watch out" at the telly. {blush}
