To be shocked and amazed

My 2 yo just fell down the stairs, proper roley poley style tumble and he is absolutely fine? He didn't even cry. If I fell the same way he did I think I would be seriously hurt.

Im still in shock, it just happened in slow motion right in front of me, I normally go ahead of him so I can catch him if he falls but he wouldn't wait and got ahead of me, and I was carrying the baby too.

Thank god that children seem to be a bit bendier than adults!!

What have your DCs done that have scared the life out of you?

They do seem to bounce don't they.

My DD aged about 2 , jumped off a small wall into a massive patch of stinging nettles. It happened in slow motion and I was standing right next to her but just couldn't grab her in time Blush

LifeBeginsAtGin · 10/06/2018 17:07

Was going to say that children bounce really well.

Praisebe · 10/06/2018 17:08

At that age they still have the reflex to just relax and go floppy which minimizes damage where as we automatically tense up our muscles making impact harder
Fascinating what toddlers can withstand

Littletreefrog · 10/06/2018 17:08

Children and drunk people bounce.

GrainneWail · 10/06/2018 17:12

Dd did similar when she was that age, she pretty much cartwheeled from the top of the stairs and landed sitting in my lap on the bottom stair. It took years off me and she didn't bat an eye. I think they haven't learned to brace so just flop along and don't seem to injure themselves the way we do. Thankfully.

Praisebe · 10/06/2018 17:12

I forgot you also bounce when drunk Grin WineGin

SoddingUnicorns · 10/06/2018 17:24

DS2 did this and the doctor said it was a “drunk man fall”. They don’t tense up at that age so they kind of bounce, apparently it’s the tensing which causes injuries (ironic since it’s a defence mechanism!)

Glad he’s ok!

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 10/06/2018 17:30

My sister fell out of her pram and down a flight of concrete stairs at around 3 months old. There wasn't a flicker out of her. In fact she slept through it. I was sobbing.
my dad swore blind she was strapped in.

lizzlebizzle33 · 10/06/2018 17:33

He seems absolutely fine thank you.

He definitely went limp as he fell, he kind of crumpled down the stairs. I still can't believe it, he's just running round now like nothing happened, shouting 'oh no dinosaurs' (we're watching Andys prehistoric adventures).

Now should I tell DH or wait for him to get home from work? I don't want to worry him.

The angels take care of children and drunks.

QuilliamCakespeare · 10/06/2018 17:34

Littlest surfed down the stairs headfirst at 9 months. It was the start of things to come. DH once turned his back for two seconds while feeding him and he'd clambered of out the high chair (despite being strapped in) and was sat in the middle of the dining room table with both hands in a pot of hummus.

LorelaiVictoriaGilmore · 10/06/2018 17:39

Ds fell backwards off a kitchen chair. I had told him not to rock back on his chair approximately 4000 times that day... I told him he would fall backwards and hurt himself. He did fall backwards. He did not hurt himself. I was almost annoyed that he didn't hurt himself! BlushGrin

lizzlebizzle33 · 10/06/2018 18:04

Wow @QuilliamCakespeare he must have really wanted that hummus!

TheActualRealCinderella · 11/06/2018 09:24

Why do young children go floppy rather than tending up?

StealthPolarBear · 11/06/2018 09:26

Actually the question is why do we tense up when it's a bad thing to do?

lizzlebizzle33 · 11/06/2018 09:55

I don't know, I'm glad they do though! Maybe it's because we know what's happening and it's going to hurt and they are just blissfully unaware of what's going on?

My 3 yr old fell down the stairs from top to bottom a few months ago. She looked like a rag doll falling down and was absolutely fine. Those few seconds lasted hours tho!

ApocalypseNowt · 11/06/2018 10:06

See this is why I keep myself permanently drunk 🤪

BillywilliamV · 11/06/2018 10:11

Just keep an eye on him, my neice bounced off a bed at two and it took three days for my sister to notice that she was favouring one arm. Two greenstick !

SinkGirl · 11/06/2018 10:15

My twins were preemie and one was very small and very poorly so we have always been a bit over protective of him.

One day I was downstairs with one and my husband was upstairs with the other one getting him ready for bed and then I heard my DH howling like a wounded animal. I ran upstairs - he had put the baby on the bed, turned his back to put something away and when he turned back he saw the baby roll for the first time and roll himself right off the bed and fall to the hardwood floor.

The baby was completely fine, my DH was definitely not.

Months later they were sat on the sofa and one of them launched themselves off, their whole body bent backwards as they landed on their head and I thought “his neck is broken”. Nope, barely even cried.

Kids are made of rubber and magic! StarGrin

LilMadAgain · 11/06/2018 10:27

I was holding my then 9 month old son on my lap, sitting on the sofa and having cuddles. The little bugger bounced on my knee and promptly dropped to the floor like wtf? He landed on the floor, cried once, dribbled and chuckled. Kids.

IthinkIsawahairbrushbackthere · 11/06/2018 10:31

DH was deep cleaning the carpets and had lifted the drain cover in the back garden to pour the dirty water away. DS 4 was fascinated and was following daddy round at a respectful distance. He was pretty obedient, had been told not to go outside and seemed to understand. DH went out to get more shampoo, I was feeding DD and I could hear a sing-song "Mummeeee can you help meeee!" and I assumed he wanted to bring a toy out from the toy room so was calling back "In a minute".

Eventually I went to help him and he wasn't there. He had of course stepped outside to investigate the drain, stepped too far and landed, 6ft down the drain. I couldn't reach to pull him out but fortunately DS 14 was on hand to rescue him.

This is one of the many stories that will be going in the Best Man's speech for his wedding next month!

NordicNobody · 11/06/2018 10:37

My almost 2 year old did a freaking backflip off the play equipment at the park last week. You get to the top up a few levels and he sort of flip flopped from level to level until he hit the ground. He was a bit shaken for a few seconds then just carried on playing, not a scratch on him. I got some serious side eye from the other (helicopter) parents at the park though...

BigDamnHero · 11/06/2018 10:46

DS2 did similar. We had a stair gate at the top of the stairs but I'd opened it because we (me, DS1 (who was probably four) and DS2 (who was about two) were about to all go downstairs.

DS2 sort of barged ahead and I was literally in the middle of saying, 'Wait a moment for me to go first,' when he just toppled head first all the way down the stairs. His neck twisted at awful angles on the way down and I just stood there screaming. I was convinced he wouldn't ever get back up.

He cried a bit but was absolutely fine!! I think DS1 was actually far more traumatised by me screaming. Blush
