Twitter banning accounts that 'deadname' Ian Huntley - is not using his female name hate speech now?

Ian Huntley is apparently now transgender and has taken the name Nicola (which is the name of one of his victims mother)

www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2017/02/15/call-lian-child-killer-ian-huntley-has-told-inmates-call-feminine/amp/

A parody Twitter account made a complaint about somebody who 'deadnamed' Ian Huntley (i.e. referred to them as Ian Huntely not Nicola Huntley) and Twitter upheld the complaint. Here is something the fake account tweeted to give you a flavour.

A warning from Aunty Xyr: If you misgender ANYONE you will be reported for transphobic abuse. This includes murderers like Lian (NOT Ian) Huntley. Misgendering is bigotry and it puts my life more in danger when you use it to attack society's worst people. I'm watching

Here is a twitter thread with more information

My issue is not about the fact that Ian Huntley is trans or the politics of 'deadnaming' but rather that Twitter have taken such reports seriously considering

  • a clearly vexatious report
  • from a clearly unreliable source
  • about one of the UK's most notorious child killers
  • on the basis of tabloid rumour not fact
  • via what it has said is an automated process

Am I being unreasonable or is Twitter's complaint adjudication system insane?

If they stuck to that, roses I don’t think there’s be an issue. As a statement it’s reasonable.

The problem is that a woman can say that she doesn’t believe humans can change sex and she will get a deluge of abuse - nasty stuff. Rape threats for example, direct threats of violence and twitter will take no action. But they will ban her for hate speech for stating a fact.

That IS ignoring misogyny. And saying humans can’t change sex is not transphobia.

MarthaArthur · 10/06/2018 19:13

Twitter allowed a man to direct sexist abuse at me and make rape comments and when i defended myself they deleted my comments and froze my account for hours. His comments were allowed to stand. So twitter doesnt give a shit about women or sex discrimination but they do apparently care about people talking about biological fact.

Ian Huntley is a murderer, a vile person, that doesn't change whether he says he is a man or a woman.

I really don't care much about him or his feelings...he didn't care anything for 2 innocent girls.

DJLippy · 10/06/2018 20:09

Misogynistic content is not considered hate speech because sex is not a protected characteristic under hate speech legislation

Hang on so there is no evidence that Ian Huntley has transitioned or changed his name but Twitter will stop people from mentioning him because of some TRA complaints.

If he has transitioned then this is bonkers, surely we cannot not mention the crimes which is is FAMOUS for and the very positive changes to child protection afterwards.

If he hasn't transitioned then we still can't talk about him?

Both scenarios are crazy? Have I misunderstood?

I have just seen from another thread that this lady claims her Twitter account was restricted for saying Ian Huntley is a man. I am speechless.

Looks like lib dems have spoken up in support

Fucking hell. I used to consider myself liberal but it seems like I'm a bigot for believing a dangerous murderer is best kept in a male prison away from vulnerable women.

Just so you know Mumsnet has issued rules on transgender topic moderation. It's in user space and the feminist board.

There have been some requests for clarification and a mod has responded. I'm sorry I don't know how to link on app but here is one of the questions and clarifications

What about, for example, Ian Huntley - is it ok to say he is a man and call him 'he'.
We think we've allowed for flexibility and context by saying 'it's likely' to be deleted, rather than 'it will
