I have a very lively, needs constant attention 5 year old ds and 2 year old dd who is just going through a tabtrum/mine phase. Will have first ever 6 week summer holiday coming up without any nursery days etc... and I don't work. Does everyone have a plan or play it by ear?

I have a plan!

We have a 2 week family holiday and a festival camping trip Thurs - Monday so that loses best part of 4 weeks.

Then DS (5) is sport mad so does 3 days tennis camp one week and 3 days cricket the other week.

The random days around all that, although there's about 12 of them, don't seem too daunting as there's always something on the horizon so I don't feel a huge pressure to do much in between.

I'd recommend knowing you have either clubs or days out planned ahead that are spaced out as it really helps me chill out on the other days.

When mine were preschool age and I was at home all day with them I had a themed plan. Each week had a different theme

Eg Farm week

  • day out to a farm park
  • trip to the local farm shop to choose fruit and veg we don’t normally have
  • make sheep out of cotton wool and cardboard tubes
  • colour in tractor pictures
  • watch farm themed programmes eg big barn farm
  • read any farm related books
  • get out the happyland farm

Then I did other weeks eg transport, space, etc

Just helped to focus the week and make them more interesting.

I have a plan! Swimming crash course for one week, sports camp another week, family holiday third week, faffing about and day trips for the remaining weeks. Will plan those closer to the time.

Depending on where you are OP check out as much free stuff as you can - galleries and museums and even some of our local churches have activity sheets/craft days etc. For free. I try to alternate busy day with chill out day on the weeks without a paid activity plan like swimming.
