Charity door chuggers at 10am on a Sunday!

Sunday morning and am enjoying my one lie in of the whole week. Someone starts banging on my front door repeatedly. Presume it's my lodger who has lost his key after a night out so haul myself out of bed, put clothes on, put contact lenses in, go down three flights of stairs hoping to bribe him to bring me a bacon sandwich as an apology.

It's a bloody charity chugger! At 10am! On a Sunday!

Now I'm up I can see that my quiet street is crawling with them. There's a lady with a clipboard who is also making a lot of noise shouting down the road telling them which houses to knock at. Also they've made next doors loud and yappy dogs bark.

Aibu to be irrationally annoyed by them interrupting my nice peaceful Sunday morning?

Keep a large nerf gun on your bedroom window ledge. Job done.

Iceweasel · 10/06/2018 13:54

There is no time that everyone is going to think is reasonable. Shift workers might sleep until 2pm. Some people don't like answering the door after dark in the winter.

AviatorShades · 10/06/2018 14:05

grrrrr.. fatbloke drops women off to chugg in my district in my little side road. He,then sits on his fat arse in the car til they come back.

Or, rather, he did!

Til the Sunday morning I went over to him, told him to get off his fat arse(and, yes, he was fat), and go do his own cardio-vascular chugging.

Never seen him round here again.

I get annoyed if anyone knocks on my door on a Sunday. Isn’t Sunday supposed to be a rest day? We don’t get mail on Sundays and generally our neighbourhood is quite quiet on Sundays and for example all the loud garden jobs are done on Saturdays (as you’d probably get someone complaining if you tried to do it on a Sunday Grin). I love that there’s one day of the week when I don’t have to answer my door to anyone. Although I’m a bit miffed that Amazon deliveries have started arriving on Sundays but they’re usually in the late afternoon so at least I’m not woken up by them. Halo

Fluffyears · 10/06/2018 16:18

They can fuck off whatever time they knock at my door. If a charity can afford to pay these idiots then they don’t need my money. The one I hate most is shelter, yes they do amazing work but if you give them a direct debit they bombard you with marketing asking for more. E-mails, phone calls, letters....I stopped my direct debit after they sent me a cd of sob stories. How much did sending cd’s out cost?

QuinionsRainbow · 10/06/2018 17:52

We still don't know which charity. Confused

Toooldtobearsed · 10/06/2018 17:54

Chuggers? Yes, terrible!

10am? 10AM????

Practically lunchtime 😁😂

Buglife · 10/06/2018 18:01

I don’t think they should knock on doors at all. Especially as they won’t hand out literature or allow you to give hem some cash, you have to give them your bank details based on a few minutes chat at the door... I know why a direct debit is better for them l, they know what’s coming in each month etc but really, I don’t want to make that commitment immediately. Although I don’t think 10am on a Sunday is a huge problem for most people... I hate it when they come at 6-7pm at night when I’m in the throes of bedtime with the kids.

Nicknacky · 10/06/2018 18:05

aviator That's a terrible thing to say to someone. I wouldn't be bragging about being so nasty to someone.

sirfredfredgeorge · 10/06/2018 18:07

10am is the earliest they can knock on the weekend, you were pretty unlucky to get them on their first call, are you sure it wasn't 9:59am then you can complain...

(not that it will actually do anything, but the charities argue the number of complaints mean that most people are happy with it)

Extravagant · 10/06/2018 18:08

I would be extremely irritated by anyone knocking at my door and demanding money (at any time). One of the charities I regularly donate to keeps sending me letters asking me to keep in touch but I haven’t replied so they will have to stop thanks to GDPR (I would much rather they didn’t use my donations to post me endless begging letters).

BrightYellowDaffodil · 10/06/2018 18:11

The one I hate most is shelter, yes they do amazing work but if you give them a direct debit they bombard you with marketing asking for more

I donate to Shelter and I told them that if they continued to send marketing mail etc I would cancel my donation. That stopped it all and now all I get is a newsletter thingy about twice a year.

We had Greenpeace round here recently, knocking on doors mid-morning during the week. I was in the middle of some work so wasn't impressed and told them so. It's bad enough when they're in the town centres but at least you skirt round to avoid them, which you can't do when the buggers are banging on your door.

smashhits90s · 10/06/2018 18:18

That would piss me off too OP.

The most recent one at my door was quite rude.

A while ago, I phoned the SSPCA to collect an injured animal from my garden. There was an attitude on the phone because I said I would have to leave animal there (in a carrier) because my son needed collected from football practice. Three weeks later got a phone call from the number I phone. I assumed it was an update on the animal. Wrong! They phoned and asked me for a monthly donation to their charity so they can continue the work that they do, like they did with the injured animal they came out to collect from me.

I was not happy.

MaisyPops · 10/06/2018 18:23

They shouldn't be harrassing anyone door to door begging for money in my opinion. It's pushy, intrustive, potentially manipulates more vulnerable members of society and often the chugger's commission is a % of their 'takings'. Hate hate hate them.

But if 10am is a perfectly reasonable for anyone to knock on a door.

LoislovesStewie · 10/06/2018 18:35

Many years ago I worked shifts, nights would finish at 6 and I would go home and off to bed.I always put a note on the door saying`night worker, don't disturb' . After one bad shift I was woke up by some idiot wanting to read the meters which were sadly in the house not in a cupboard outside. He seemed to think that I should be up at that time. I worked for the emergency services, so I told him that if they ever wanted to talk to him about a non urgent matter perhaps 2 a.m might be a good time. He really didn't get why I was so cross. As far as I'm concerned if anyone knocks on the door and it's not urgent, I tell them to bugger off. I don't want chuggers, JWs or Mormons, and I am not interested.

LoislovesStewie · 10/06/2018 18:37

It was 10 a.m when the idiot knocked. Forgot to say.

MotherofPearl · 10/06/2018 18:47

YADNBU OP.

Actually I'd always be up by 10am but I have been so annoyed by them in the past - they have a knack for knocking on my door in the early evening when I'm in the throes of trying to get my DC bathed/storied/to sleep. I find it very intrusive so send them packing pretty quickly.

formerbabe · 10/06/2018 18:52

I like to see which charity they are collecting for then whatever affliction it is, tell them I'm suffering with it and I'm so pleased to see a charity that is aimed at helping those with it are knocking on my door and what help/support can they offer me? That shuts them up.

Frosty66612 · 11/06/2018 08:39

I find them so manipulative a lot of the time. Last time I opened the door to one of them, the first thing he said was “what a nice surprise being greeted by such a lovely smile”. He was clearly trying to butter me up so i’d be nice to him and sign up for a direct debit. I told him I was busy and shut the door on him. I don’t know why charities still do it as it’s not an effective way to win over members of the public and get them to donate. I hate getting junk mail too but I’d far rather receive a flyer through the door about signing up to the charity than have a cold caller knocking

RevRichardWayneGaryWayne · 11/06/2018 09:37

We have this sign on our door:

images2.moneysavingexpert.com/attachment/nocoldcallersv1.pdf

Before that we'd get at least 1 every fortnight, and been know to have 3 in 1 day - since putting it up I think we've had 1 in about 5 years. that's all cold callers, not just chuggers.

I'd highly recommend it!

blackteasplease · 11/06/2018 09:42

I think I'm in the "there's no good time " camp. people shouldn't just bang on your door for no reason. Even in the middle of the day mid week someone might have been working nights or been up all night woth a baby.

they dont know because they don't know you, which is a clue as to why they shouldn't be banging on your door!Aso the banging urgently as though it's an emergency is super annoying.

ShatnersWig · 11/06/2018 09:43

If you wish to support a charity but don't want any literature or phone calls from them, the easiest option is to send a cheque. With no contact details. They can cash it, get your money, but you won't get any communication from them whatsoever.

I have a couple I support regularly and one I am happy to get their literature so I have given them my address. Never ever had a phone call from them.

I won't support any charity that has either door-to-door or street chuggers.

Magicpaintbrush · 11/06/2018 09:46

If I had said yes to every chugger who had ever tried to sign me up I would be in serious financial difficulties by now. If I want to help a charity I will do so off my own back and in my own time.

I think these pushy salesy type of techniques are very off-putting to us Brits, we don't like having our faces shoved in it with the pressure piled on, we like to quietly make up our own minds thank you very much.

blackteasplease · 11/06/2018 09:48

I also hate the ones in the street who block the pavement and try to talk to you. There should be a law requiring anyone collecting, marketing, taking photos of celebs or news items for newspapers to stand at one and side and not block the way!

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 11/06/2018 09:50

The fact that they knocked isn't unreasonable. It's the fact that they persisted on knocking when you didn't answer.
