To put a 6year old in the front seat of the car?

Taking DD6 and 2 friends also age 6 out for the day tomorrow.
I have 3 booster car seats but only 2 fit in the back.
I either need to put one of them in the back with out a booster seat or one in the front in a booster seat.
I'm leaning towards using the booster and letting one go in the front seat but not sure if that's the best option.

That was awful spelling. I need caffeine

OhWifey · 10/06/2018 11:03

You must check the manual for your specific car. They will vary around car seats in the front.

Blacktea why do you say the middle is more dangerous? I have always heard the middle is the safest - if you think about any impact you are furthest away from it. I would get a non high back booster (a tenner in most supermarkets) and use it in the middle of the back. The boosters on either side offer further protection, and the booster seat puts the seat belt in the right place for their pelvis. Happy to be told I’m wrong!
I won’t let my 10 year old sit in the passenger seat. He hates me for it, but then he hates me for a lot!

If a child restraint is not available, children under 3 years must travel in the rear, but may be unrestrained. Children 3 years and over, up to 135cm tall must sit in the rear and use an adult seat belt. Children aged 12 years or more, or over 135cm tall, may travel the front, but must wear the seat belt.

I think the middle being dangerous is for when they just have a lap belt. Most have shoulder ones these days.

If spotted, you'd be arrested here (Spain)

Mymycherrypie · 10/06/2018 11:30

Mine is over 135cms at 7yo. He goes in the front sometimes to escape being kicked by his baby brother.

AvoidingDM · 10/06/2018 11:41

ChipsandChicken that advice is so out of date.
Children are not allowed to travel in a car without a suitable child restraint. Taxis are the only exception to the rule.
I read up on the law when my son was 18mths old. DH had gone to work 200 miles away with the car seat. DS was ill and needed a Doctor (he ended up over night in hospital). My Dad ended up driving us to the Docs and onto the hospital. I took the view the risk of an accident was no different if it was a taxi and I would happily stand up in court and defend the decision and my Dad if the police stopped him / us.

AvoidingDM · 10/06/2018 11:43

DanTDM does that mean children cannot travel in vans or lorries with no backseat?

IamPickleRick · 10/06/2018 11:44

Google is your friend.

Avoidingdm you wouldn’t have needed to go to court, your journey would have been accepted under the rules in the link just posted below. I’ve known people who interpreted unexpected journeys as being grandparents collecting gcs every day after school, madness! But a hospital dash is very different.

danTDM · 10/06/2018 14:00

Avoiding I don't know about vans or lorries. Just about cars I'm afraid. Smile

I don't imagine they would be allowed though, no.

No children under 12 in front seat EVER. On the spot fine of 200 euros plus possible points/arrest.

AvoidingDM · 10/06/2018 14:27

I am & Sunnyday thank you. Smile
At the time when I was looking I couldn't find any exceptions to the law.
That said it was probably news sites i was reading. It wasn't long after the change in law from "car seat when available" to "must be in car seat" they tightened up the law because of exactly that Grandparents not making seats available. LO was only about 13mths, wouldn't touch food, and couldn't keep milk or water down so I wasn't spending hours hunting the web either.
