I went for a meal recently with two friends, lovely restaurant near us, how we'd never come across it before I really don't know, but it's fantastic. Have been several times over the past month.

I digress as fuken usual Hmm.

The last meal came to £146 plus change, I popped it all on my card (upto £170 to include top) glanced down the itemised Bill as the transaction went through and there was a drink on it that we hadn't ordered

So I quieryired it and the staff member said she'd refund it through my card, I suggested that they could just have a bigger tip, but no it had to be refunded. So she popped the £4.70 back on to my account. So I put the equivalent coins on the bill presenter for a tip.

AIBU to think is was a normal thing to do? There's part of me that thinks I was being a pedantic nob being all pricinpled.

🤔

Why did you choose to leave an even bigger tip?

CoughLaughFart · 09/06/2018 20:22

The refund is probably just procedure. The waitress might have got into trouble if she’d just taken the money. By contrast, you were pleased with the service and gave a good tip - that will reflect well. You’ve done nothing to worry about.

I've read here that "tips" put on credit card don't go to restaurant staff at all, or not entirely. If you want staff to get the amount of tip you wanted, then always give them cash.

I & others had to wait in Lidl queue the other day while someone demanded their rightful 10p refund. That was silly.

Is this a real issue? Confused

People have very dull lives if this is what keeps them up at night.

StandingOvulation · 09/06/2018 20:26

@StealthPolarBear because I didn't want to look like some mammoth arse quibbling over a drink on the bill.

Lucky old you that has enough money to not give a shit about a fiver here or there.

Itsveryhard · 09/06/2018 20:29

I would always quibble over a drink hadn't paid for. I don't want to pay for something I haven't had! Your tip was already generous so I'd have taken the money!

Shumpalumpa · 09/06/2018 20:29

Challenging charges for things you haven't had is not quibbling.

StealthPolarBear · 09/06/2018 20:33

Yes tip went up from 16% to 20% as the total bill went down too

I wonder if the person wanting a 10p refund in Lidl had also been overcharged the week before for the same product. While it would seem petty as a one of it does get rather annoying for prices to be out of date for a substantial period of time (says the person who once asked for a 1p overcharge on a pack of gum to be refunded after the display price had been wrong for several months).

MyRelationshipIsWeird · 09/06/2018 20:49

I’d say this is totally reasonable as the tip goes to the staff, the money from the bill goes to the restaurant, so it’s separate.

When I’ve had an issue with substandard food and it isn’t taken off the bill I just give a smaller or no tip, but I know this isn’t entirely fair as the crappy food is the fault of the chef not the waiting staff.

However, it is the waiting staff’s job to ask sure I’m happy, so if I’m not, no tip.

@ZibbidooZibbidooZibbidoo yeah a dull life, but Naice Food so not all bad. Hmm
