To think this is PC gone mad

DS 17 is off to Sorrento on a Geography trip. Kit list had all the normal things you would expect but specifically stated only club football shirts allowed, please no England shirts as we do not want to upset the Italians who haven't qualified for the world cup. Are they really going to be that put out?

Pc gone mad is a sensationalist.

They probably don't want the kids to get bratetuo, though.

PickAChew · 09/06/2018 00:30

Sensationalist headline.

Battleax · 09/06/2018 00:31

the reason stated was not wanting to upset anyone. Why not just ban them altogether and say it's just in case they get caught up in any unpleasantness?

Are you drawing some enormous distinction between “upsetting people” and “unpleasantness”? Confused

Sprinklesinmyelbow · 09/06/2018 00:32

Oh when I was on school trips the boys used to cause football hooligan trouble all the time. Not at all surprised by the rule

I sat through a school trip to germany once where the boys at the back hummed damnbusters the whole time. That’s non pc

Battleax · 09/06/2018 00:33

BTW if you’re going to give threads hysterical titles “PC gawn madddd” is the traditional spelling Wink

MrsTerryPratchett · 09/06/2018 00:34

I thought it was 'gorn' on MN. Hmm

Battleax · 09/06/2018 00:37

I do believe you’re right MrsTP. I do apologise Grin

MrsTerryPratchett · 09/06/2018 00:44

As well you should Battle. Frankly I expect better of you. Grin

Battleax · 09/06/2018 00:45

Won’t happen again Smile

Jonbb · 09/06/2018 01:20

Sounds as though it was said tongue in cheek.

JaneJeffer · 09/06/2018 01:48

It will be far too hot in Sorrento at this time of year to wear any polyester football shirt. I recommend a nice cotton t-shirt.

NotAgainYoda · 09/06/2018 01:59

"so they don't upset anyone'' is a euphemism for ''so they don't attract any attention and get beaten up". I think

I don't see any connection with 'PC'

tenaciousD · 09/06/2018 02:51

Well, I hope they won't wear white as it'll bring up memories of the Italians in the war.

MrsTerryPratchett · 09/06/2018 03:06

God I hate lazy stereotypes about the Italians being cowards. Learn a little. The Alpini for example. My DGF who actually fought in Italy, found them fierce and brave.

Birdsgottafly · 09/06/2018 04:43

So you've missed the News reports of Liverpool fans being attacked outside Anfield at the last match and one Liverpool fan was so badly beaten that he was put into a coma?

I don't see how seeing as the Express published lies and there was a sacking over it's reporting.

Four days ago Roma Fans have been banned from the next away game. That means that their Club cannot sell them tickets for that match and the Club has also been fined.

Also Gianluigi Buffon is on a three match ban, which many aren't happy with.

It's nothing to do with PC and all about keeping teenage Lads (who might rise to an argument) safe. The Staff shouldn't be put in a position of danger and if you watch the videos of the attacks on Liverpool Fans, the danger is real.

The school are trying to do their best without having to deal with Dads storming up the school complaining that a top for Club the Pupils Family have supported since time immemorial, can't be worn and they aren't going to be dictated to by anyone.

They've taken an easy route, without giving anyone cause for a Daily Mail sad face photo opportunity, to cut down on any potential trouble.

FindoGask · 09/06/2018 05:50

Plenty of places where football shirts are banned where I live. It's common sense.

When I was 15 my dad wouldn't let me wear my German army shirt (practically uniform for every grunge kid round my way) on a French exchange. He is far from PC.

slashlover · 09/06/2018 07:37

There's a chance that if the school had said 'no football shirts in case it causes tension with the locals and the shirts have a bad reputation' then some parents could have decided that the trip was therefore too dangerous for their kids or that some may have gone down the 'How dare you say that! ENGERLAND!!!!!!' route.

Ohyesiam · 09/06/2018 07:42

But they are saying that op. Any aggression from Italian thugs would likely to be because of jealousy on not getting into the World Cup .
No pussy footing, the letter is just worded differently to how you would have worded it.
No pc that I can see.

justaguy · 09/06/2018 07:58

No, it’s not “PC gone mad”. It’s “the latest from the elf ‘n’ safety brigade” - probably written by a “proper jobsworth”.

Go and read Littlejohn’s back-catalogue until you can get these things right.

rosesandflowers · 09/06/2018 08:29

Everytime someone complains about "PC gone mad" I start taking them less seriously.

Honestly, what with all the football messes that have happened, I think they're trying to avoid a full on fight.

AppleKatie · 09/06/2018 08:35

Surely the effect of a group of teens wearing a variety of different club shirts (and presumably other clothes as well!) is less noteworthy than a group of 20 teens, 10 of which are wearing England shirts.

Seems sensible to me. The odd club shirt within a group is one thing, it’s the en masse that’s the potential issue.

Clionba · 09/06/2018 08:38

The responsibility that those teachers have, taking teenagers abroad brings me out in a cold sweat! Please support them as much as possible, they're only trying to get things to run smoothly!! Smile
