*MASSIVE SPOILERS* 13 Reasons Why Season 2

MonochromeDog · 08/06/2018 21:21

I've almost finished season 2 and have been really gripped all the way through so far.

I'm in the middle of the last episode of season 2, which has mostly been about Hannah's memorial etc.

Then I get to the scene with Tyler in the boys toilets - JESUS FUCKING CHRIST!

It's just so horrific! I got to the point where Monty picks up the broom handle and they're pulling down Tyler's pants and I had to turn it off. Well more I nearly threw my laptop across the room as I started shaking and sobbing.

Really dramatic reaction on my part, as someone who can sit through Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead with no problem I don't know where my reaction came from. Confused Took me about 20 minutes to calm down. Hmm I haven't been able to get the scene out of my head all day!

My question is does it get worse? I need to watch the rest of the episode as I'm dying to know how the season ends but I don't know if I can sit through that scene again.

That scenes pretty bad. It does get worse.
I have the same reaction to scenes of that nature in any film or show.

LoveHarry · 08/06/2018 21:23

Keep watching. That was the worst bit and I agree absolutely horrible

ToriaPumpkin · 08/06/2018 21:26

Those few minutes are awful. But after what I'm sure you know is coming, it calms down again. The rest of the episode is hard to watch, but there is nothing worse.

Waitingonasmiley42 · 08/06/2018 21:26

It was really shocking and hard to watch. I don't think there is anything anywhere near as vivid in the rest of the episodes.

Plump82 · 08/06/2018 22:04

No it doesn't get any worse.
As an aside i was so disappointed with the 2nd series. Wish they hadnt bothered.

Gileswithachainsaw · 08/06/2018 22:09

Its bad. However I don't understand why there is more outrage about this than there was about what happened go all the girls.

It's a very good series. Sadly very close to home for alot of people.

If you watch the documentary on Netflix called the hunting ground you will see just how true to life the behaviour and adults if the students by the sports teams .

Think that's why the whole thing is so uncomfortable to watch.

Gileswithachainsaw · 08/06/2018 22:10

And assults.

Not adults. Stupid phone

Boulshired · 08/06/2018 22:40

It made my stomach completely turn and It it had been a girl the same would of happened. It really didn’t need that it was a fierce beating already.

Gileswithachainsaw · 08/06/2018 23:01

It made my stomach completely turn and It it had been a girl the same would of happened. It really didn’t need that it was a fierce beating already

But that's the thing isn't it.

The whole show is based on a girl who commiteed suiced. There's been rape and slut shaming and victim blaming and cyber bullying and violence, homophobia, another kid tried to kill themselves. The adults brushed it all under the carpet the school made the girls attend along side their rapist. Theres been lies and shared photos and the list and the polaroids/stalking etc . And that scene where bryce is thinking about the photos and what he did to the girls and is getting turned on. Its not a show thats ever going to have been comfortable viewing.

So why is this one scene something that is is "too much"

MonochromeDog · 10/06/2018 00:04

@Gileswithachainsaw I actually don't know why this scene was "too much", compared to the other rape scenes. Confused

I mean Hannah's rape scene is bad were she just goes limp like she's given up, it's awful and uncomfortable viewing. And Jessica's is as awful and uncomfortable.

I think the reason this scene was too much is that in both the previous rape scenes you can kind of see it coming. WIth Jessica when Bryce is outside the room with Justin you just think oh shit he's going to rape her. And when Hannah is in the hot tub and everyone else gets out, you know Bryce is going to get in with her.

With Tyler, I thought he was just going to beat up. Actually I thought they were going to kill him! I never saw the broom thing coming until it was actually about to happen, there was no warning at all and I think that was why it seemed so much more brutal and horrific.

No it doesn't get worse IMO. It's horrific and I didn't see it coming until the point it happened but didn't find it so bad that I had to stop watching. I admit I've been desensitized but I know of this happening in schools and the bullies a decade later laughing and bragging about doing it! They don't see what they did as wrong so I do feel this story needs telling.

Kind you, I've watched Outlander and I found the final two episodes of the first season much worst than 13RW (or maybe it's because I watched Outlander do it first that 13Rw wasn't so bad for me)

comfycosy123 · 10/06/2018 00:19

Personally for me I don't think that Tyler's rape was worse, any form of rape is horrid and I had a reaction to both female and male rape scenes on the show. I felt so sad for Tyler he had come back this confident boy he was trying and then that !! I feel like maybe that made the impact stronger ? Or maybe it's because we have become so used used to female rape and male rape is still a taboo I don't know ?

Either way it has everyone talking and I hope that by putting it out there as horrific as it is it can help some people .

VelvetSpoon · 10/06/2018 00:30

I thought it was horrendous. I think the physical brutality of it made it seen worse and it was unexpected. I felt the series does signpost Tyler's ultimate reaction, but I in no way expected what the final trigger for it would be.

I have to say I feel sick for thinking that this isn't just a drama. That out there in schools and colleges this stuff is happening. Maybe not all of it in the same place. But I can imagine a lot of schools where slut shaming, cyber bullying etc is commonplace and that's the thin end if the wedge. I can only hope that in real life the teachers and other professionals aren't so useless as those on 13RW.

CaledonianQueen · 10/06/2018 00:48

If you watch the documentary that discusses the series with producers, script writers and consultant psychologists and psychiatrists, they mention that the reason they included that scene, is that from their research, attacks of that type, are rife across American school locker rooms. Tbh that was the most shocking for me!

CaledonianQueen · 10/06/2018 00:51

JAMM I agree about the Outlander scenes, I am a massive fan but in both the books and the series in subsequent watching/ reading I have had to skip that part. The levels of sadism that are reached in Outlander are demonic in comparison to the Tyler scene. Which is equally horrific!

JAMMFYesPlease · 10/06/2018 02:52

Caledonia same. The actor was so believable throughout. I didn't find the book as bad to be honest but I did see the show first so expected everything watched.

LuMarie · 10/06/2018 03:06

I just finished season 2, I had the same reaction as you.

I actually covered my eyes when I realised what was happening and was disturbed by it.

It doesn't get worse on that theme, but it does continue on the theme of disturbing and actually manages to get a bit rubbish at the same time.

Honestly I knew nothing of it when I started watching, I think it's massively irresponsible and far too graphic/disturbing. Mental Health specialists have written all kind of concerns about it being dangerous and I agree completely.

Teen high school drama and all these graphic dangerous horrific themes do not mix.

Gileswithachainsaw · 10/06/2018 09:12

. I can only hope that in real life the teachers and other professionals aren't so useless as those on 13RW

Sorry to disappoint but basically you can get away with anything of you play sports.

If you watch that documentary you eill.see that students are actively discouraged from.reporting.

Even in this country girls are forced to attend class with their rapists.

Honestly the fact that this kind of stuff happens. That this could be our kids one day that are either the victims or the perps and that are physically enabled or disbelieved...well to me that's more horrific than any scene with a mop.

VelvetSpoon · 10/06/2018 11:20

It really is horrifying.

I was bullied at school in the sense of being touched daily (boys touching or trying to, my boobs or bum). We also couldn't use the loos because it had huge glass windows about 6ft off the ground but just above a ledge. Boys would climb up and watch us. Teachers saw it but thought that kind of stuff was funny Hmm. Now where near as bad as anything on 13RW, but the general principle that boys were allowed to do as they please because they were boys was still there. I'll admit I naively thought the atmosphere in schools was more supportive now. It would seem not Sad
