So sorry for posting here, no idea what topic to post this in and just wanted some answers fast!

I just drifted off to sleep on the couch around 30 mins ago (late night last night and busy week!) when I kept hearing a woman talking, really loudly! It was starting to do my head in as I was just drifting off when she'd start up again. Eventually I must of dosed, I don't remember if I was dreaming but I could still hear this damn woman even though I 'knew' I was now asleep. Eventually I realised that it was coming from the hallway and only getting louder.

I awoke immediately realising it was coming from my own house. I listened for maybe 3 mins or so to hear who on earth it was as I was worried it could be an intruder etc... then realised it was ME! Yep, you heard that right and nope I am not crazy. It was my voice ShockShock

I couldn't make out any words which is weird because it was so loud and sounded as though I was literally in my hallway having a full blown conversation with someone yet couldn't hear any responses even though 'my' voice paused to let the other talk. SO FREAKIN' WEIRD.

I'd like to think I'm a grounded person so can anyone offer any opinions unto what on earth happened? Scientific or otherwise? I am a Christian and do believe in a spiritual world however I am fully ready to admit it was probably something weirdly scientific in nature.

So AIBU to be really freaked out and have no idea what just happened?! Please offer me some suggestions. This is NOT a troll post, this genuinely just happened.

P.S. as soon as I got the courage to get up and investigate the voice stopped immediately and consequently, there was no one in my hallway and the door was locked Blush

You were talking in your sleep before you'd quite dozed off. It's not that weird or scientific, you were just half asleep.

virginwhocantdrive · 08/06/2018 15:47

my DH does that as he's drifting off to sleep. mumbles and wakes himself ip.

HansSoloTraveller1 · 08/06/2018 15:48

Was a dream from being half asleep half awake. I do that all the time. Out of interest how did you know it was your voice? I have no idea what my voice sounds like.

SanFranBear · 08/06/2018 15:49

Sounds like sleep paralysis - lots of weird things happen and it's pretty common

PaddyF0dder · 08/06/2018 15:50

That’s a hypnagogic hallucination. Perfectly normal. It occurs on the border of sleeping and waking.

It definitely doesn’t suggest you’re unwell in any way.

SanFranBear · 08/06/2018 15:50

From the wonderful wiki:
During an episode, one may hear, feel, or see things that are not there.

PaddyF0dder · 08/06/2018 15:55

Respectfully, it’s not sleep paralysis. The OP didn’t describe feeling paralysed in any way.

The first component (falling asleep) is a hypnagogic hallucination. Arguably the second part (waking up) is a hypnopompic hallucination.

Neurologically similar to sleep paralysis, but separate.

sparklydust · 08/06/2018 15:56

Phew! Had a feeling it'd be something like that, thank you! I did have one of those 'jerks' earlier just before falling asleep, could that have been something to do with it?

For the PP who wondered how I know the sound of my own voice, just from videos really where I can be heard talking. Found out recently that I sound a lot posher than I thought I did and I'm not even remotely posh 🙈😂

OP posts:
PaddyF0dder · 08/06/2018 15:58

That’s called a myoclonic jerk. Part and parcel of being shattered and having disturbed sleep.

I love hypnagogic hallucinations. They can be great fun. Like being on drugs, but free and without the complications of actually being on drugs.

CoffeeOrSleep · 08/06/2018 16:05

Do you have an Alexia? The evil fuckers useful devices have been known to record people's conversations and have sent to other people before now, could it have recorded you and randomly played it back? (Also check your phone)

Or it's the sleep talking thing.

Or there's a rip in time in your house and you are hearing yourself from another time zone. (check outside, is there a blue police box suddenly in the street?!)

UghAgh · 08/06/2018 16:08

I get these too although I didn’t realise they had a name. I love them too. I know they are in my head but I can consciously enjoy them. It’s a bit déjà vu’ish too. My absolute best ones are where Im coming around from fainting as I think they last a lot longer. I’m a bit disappointed that I rarely faint anymore.

longlostpal · 08/06/2018 16:08

If it happens when you are awake I would see a doctor. I heard very clear voices when I had an (otherwise harmless) psychotic break at uni.

pigmcpigface · 08/06/2018 16:16

I am learning so many new words on this thread! Hypnagogic!
Hypnopompic! Myoclinic!

I can practically do a rap about sleep disorders now. Grin

I once had sleep paralysis and it was the single most terrifying experience of my life. I would describe it as an experience of pure unadulterated fear, in fact.

sparklydust · 08/06/2018 16:16

coffeeorsleep that's so creepy! I did have an Alexa sometime ago but got rid of it after hearing stories such as you've just described so wasn't that. Much to my dismay, there is no blue box outside although some cows are in the field, perhaps they were impersonating me Grin

longlostpal thanks for you advice, it only lasted for around 3 mins after I'd woken up and as soon as I stood up it stopped Blush so weird. Don't think it's a mental thing but will definitely get it seen to if it carries on.

sparkly - I woke up recently to the sound of my husband snoring loudly, only it wasn't my husband it was me! I was quite shocked to think I made that much noise.

sparklydust · 08/06/2018 16:25

lovesugarfree that's hilarious GrinGrinGrin

I've heard weird things in my sleep.
The brain is a very complex organ.

I was drifting off at the wheel once a few years ago and could have absolutely sworn I heard my grandad shouting at me to wake up (he had died not long before) it was enough to shock me into stopping safely and having a proper rest break.

Thespringsthething · 08/06/2018 16:27

It is very common for these type of weird experiences (hypnagogic/hypnopompic hallucinations) to happen within the first sleep cycle (so within 60-90 min of falling asleep), especially if you are tired and also if you are on some types of medication.

Don't panic, these things seem weird, but between sleeping and waking is a very odd zone.

HansSoloTraveller1 · 08/06/2018 16:49

Op i had one of them dreama today that i got a drink and the glass smashed in my face. I jumped so much i almost fell out of bed lol. Sleeping on your back makes it worse.

Flooffloof · 08/06/2018 16:56

I get this kind of thing occasionally. It's usually my mother shouting my full Sunday name in exasperation. Wakes me right up, cos she Been dead an eon or longer

sparklydust · 08/06/2018 18:04

So glad to hear it's pretty common. I've had that 'exploding head syndrome' before when I had severe anxiety but not experienced any kind of sleep occurrences since Shock

dragonmummy glad you pulled to safety and live to tell the tale Thanks
