Work bullies

AIBU to think that despite the importance of HR nowadays, bullying is still pretty accepted in the workplace?

I have recently changed job and my boss keeps making snide remarks, unfair criticisms, ridicules people in front of other people. I have heard that they make their staff cry occasionally (and I am talking about pretty senior people, so quite unusual) and they are constantly hovering around people's desk to check at what time they leave, so that they can question their commitment (I don't think he has realised that they can't wait to get away from him!).

He clearly has issues that he is taking out on people.

How long do I have to stay for my CVs sake? What do I tell interviewers?

Would love some ideas on what to do and how to cope although i'm not going to HR as i have heard it's been done before and noone cares. I'm not distraught, just not very impressed and feeling like i need to plan my escape. And if you are a "horrible boss", then tell us your side of the story!

I’m afraid my experience is the same as above, but without the payouts!
The bully’s bosses were well aware of the situation, and freely admitted there was a problem, but did nothing.
HR were aware of how stressful it was to work there, but ‘reassured’ me that no one liked working there Hmm
In this situation, not even staying was good for me - thought I could rely on bosses boss for a decent reference but it seems they couldn’t differentiate between the effect of my bully boss (and the impact of my disability) on my ‘performance’ Sad

My experience has been different. Had a bully for a boss for a long time with several colleagues leaving but no one made a complaint. I got to the point I couldn't take it any more, it was impacting my happiness but also performance as they were crap at managing...anyway I talked to HR, other colleagues said similar things and they left.... best thing I ever did. But i think their lack of performance meant the bullying could no longer be overlooked :(
