to be concerned about the smell off squishy toys?

These squishy foam toys are the latest school craze and dd, who’s 7, just bought one with her pocket money.
It reeks of a horrible toxic plasticky chemical smell. If I bought any other toy that smelled like this I would assume it was a cheap knock-off made of carcinogenic or hormone disrupting plastics. It’s currently out in the garden “airing”.
She got it in Smyths, and I had a quick look in a couple of other shops, including Claires, this morning but they all smelled pretty bad to me.
According to dd sniffing them is part of the appeal as they are supposed to be fragranced.
I’m a bit Shock that toys that smell like strong markers are now a craze.
I want to refund her pocket money and get rid of the nasty thing but it’s probably pointless since most of the kids in her class have collections of them.
Anyone else concerned about the smell or aibu?

Watching with interest as I thought the same thing and have commented on it to others.

They smell mouldy I think, absolutely rank! And why are they so bloody dear??

MagicFajita · 07/06/2018 21:04

They smell terrible op , I had to ask my daughter to take them to her room as I was getting a migraine.

I’m concerned about the way you can buy cheap ones online that are sent directly from China. There is no guarantee of the safety of any aspect of those ones.

PrincessHairyMclary · 07/06/2018 21:20

There have been cases of them popping and children's hands being burnt by the chemical substances inside whether they were official ones of cheap from china I don't know but DD won't be having one.

The next craze is the tangled slinky things (flow rings), I brought one for DD from a festival last year and they are harmless and less than a fiver. DD still plays with hers now. Maybe you could get her one instead and 'lose' the squishy thing.

That’s really working as it was bought from a reputable retailer.

Alanamackree · 08/06/2018 04:43

That’s the same brand as the one dd bought.
I might get her a set of those rings instead - that’s a great idea.
