I can’t walk, really bad hip pain

Posting for traffic.

I tried to get up off the sofa and collapsed. Pain in my hips and groin is excruciating. Some pain in lower back and down to knee. I can’t put any weight on my left leg and just a bit on my right.

I’ve had restless legs, some pain, the last few nights but nothing like this. DH is out of the country until tomorrow night, I have my 3 year old here. Hoping it will pass because im staying in a rented place and know nobody. Sister is hours away.

What on earth can it be? Are there any exercises that will help? I have paracetamol and codeine which I’ve just taken. No way can I get upstairs right now. Damn

Sciatica?

frasier · 07/06/2018 16:49

I had that when I was pregnant but this is much worse. Maybe it is.

I do think anything g can be done for that except pain killers can it? Can any stretches help does anyone know.

Got a high pain threshold but this is agony.

Call emergency doctor. It sounds like sciatica. Watch for any issues at all with passing urine, saddle numbness or bowel problems as all can be very serious and need urgent assessment in A&E.

Best wishes, it’s hell.

Hadalifeonce · 07/06/2018 16:53

Osteo or physio can help.

madja · 07/06/2018 16:53

Google sciatica exercises. There are some gentle ones you could try.
I have every sympathy though. I get this a lot Flowers

Painkillers kicking in now. Will try some exercises or a bath or something if I can get upstairs. Will ring doc if I can’t relieve it. Supposed to be going to g to the beach tomorrow, no way can I drive.

Poor DS is trying to make me better 😢

I’ve been carrying heavy stuff recently including DS. Wonder if that has set it off.

Bloody excruciating.

Don't get in the bath in case you get stuck. Ring your sister, yes she's hours away but you'll need help with the wean esp if you need medical help.

Good luck, sounds awful.

Stretching really helps.

If you can, lie flat on the floor, grab your right knee and bend it and bring it up to your torso. Hold. Same with other side. Rinse and repeat.

Then try to tip your toes (gently moving your hands down, no sudden movements and only go down as far as you are comfortable with).

I was like you, agony, but stretching really helped. Have a look at Youtube under sciatica stretches.

Thanks all, good point about the bath. Don’t think I can get up the stairs still anyway. Might be camping in the sitting room tonight

Stretches really helped. I did them last night and this morning and felt confident enough to drive today.

Will continue to do them.

Good news. Glad you are feeling better.

frasier · 08/06/2018 17:55

Thanks madja

I must say I scared myself. It’s horribly painful, maybe the worst pain I’ve ever had, and I’ve had shingles!

Sounds like sciatica ... Dynamic Plank is what most helps me.

madja · 08/06/2018 18:00

It is awful. I had a similar episode myself a couple of weeks ago, and ended up stranded upstairs for two or three days till I could face walking down the stairs! It's pretty frightening, we take being able to walk for granted, and it's awful when you can't.
Keep up the exercises though, I know that's helped me in the long run.

marjorie25 · 09/06/2018 01:18

I am having similar, its comes from sitting down too long.
I found this site on youtube that have some really nice exercises which have helped me.
You are right stretching really helps, but you have to be consistent (says she who is not consistent).
I can walk for miles, but once I sit down too long I feel the pain.
Do a search on youtube for: sonima fitness.
They do stretching, hip alignment, stomach exercises to name a few.
What I like about them is that the exercises are counted down and you have to hold the stretch for at least 60 seconds.
Give it a try and let me know.

Oh no, sounds awful, glad things are improving. If you go to your gp you can get a referral for physio, then you can get a diagnosis of what's actually causing the sciatica, if that's what it is. I've not heard of it affecting both sides before. Best to get looked at then given exercises specifically for your problem. I've had sciatica on and off for years from a small spinal injury and started it again Jan, thought it was the usual problem. Turns out after it getting progressively worse and finally finding time to get checked over I now have a slipped disc. I'm sure that's not the case with you but as I say, best to get an exam. Best of luck!
