To hate pinatas for kids?

I may or may not be watching This Morning Grin

Seriously though, watching those kids with cricket bats and wooden baseball bats going town on the pinatas made me feel a bit uncomfortable.

AIBU?

I’ve only seen them at one party. The child whose birthday it was went ballistic, I was shocked!

metalmum15 · 07/06/2018 12:01

Dd had one for her 6th birthday, it was all quite civilised though (I policed it very strictly 😁) I've been to a couple of parties though where the kids have gone mental, my own children actually kept out of the way!

Drchinnery · 07/06/2018 12:05

I also watched it through gritted teeth! Grin

TookyClothespin · 07/06/2018 12:07

YANBU. I hate them! Seems unnecessary to me. The kids I've seen with them also go nuts and trample each other to get the sweets! It's insane. and my shy, timid DD1 never got any sweets as wouldn't enter the fray

Hideandgo · 07/06/2018 12:08

God forbid that kids are allowed to let loose fully on something that is designed for that purpose!

What, do you think it encourages violence? I personally think it’s a game where you try to break open a cardboard box to get sweets and toys using a stick.

ArmySal · 07/06/2018 12:09

I can't see the problem with them, just a bit of fun.

AbsolutelyBeginning · 07/06/2018 12:10

Isn't it cultural appropriation? Wink

robotcartrainhat · 07/06/2018 12:10

YANBU I also hate them...I wouldnt have one at a party for my kids... but I dont say anything about them being at other childrens parties and I let my son take part in it etc
I dont class them on the same level as toy guns which I would actively discourage my child from playing with and do not allow in the house.
But I do find them a bit odd.... why is it fun to bash a horse apart with a stick? Probably a bit better if the thing isnt animal shaped... but still a bit oddly violent for a kids party

IamXXHearMeRoar · 07/06/2018 12:11

Yup cultural appropriation.

BarbarianMum · 07/06/2018 12:14

I love them and ime so do the kids. At ds2's Harry Potter party they broke open Voldemort's head with their wands, which was quite theaputic as most of them were scared of him in the stories. And thus evil was vanquished !

BarbarianMum · 07/06/2018 12:15

theraputic

IamXXHearMeRoar · 07/06/2018 12:19

So if something scares you then break it's head open with a stick.

Good lesson.

BasicSAHM · 07/06/2018 12:20

I just get the ones with the ribbon pulls. All the fun of grabbing candy off the floor..none of the violence.

Standstilling · 07/06/2018 12:20

Voldemort! Such a good idea.

Thanks for the reminder - my Mum wants one for her 70th. What can I put in an adult’s pinata? Grandchildren will also be present...

qwertyuiopy · 07/06/2018 12:21

OMG! Breaking heads open! Therapeutic?

ArmySal · 07/06/2018 12:21

Yeah, they teach children to attack something violently if it scares them... FFS

ArmySal · 07/06/2018 12:22

It's not an actual head, calm down Mavis

qwertyuiopy · 07/06/2018 12:22

In which country did they originate?

MargaretCavendish · 07/06/2018 12:24

Do you also think that pin the tail on the donkey encourages animal cruelty?

I strongly advise that you don't listen the lyrics of any nursery rhyme, ever.

MissMoneyPlant · 07/06/2018 12:25

The plain ones arent so bad but most seem to be animals or characters - it's horrible. Encouraging children to hit something that is presented as a someone or an animal.

Love Breaks my heart that his innocent kindness will be ruined by this world. What idiots thought he should beat up a figure the same size as him?

MadJanice · 07/06/2018 12:27

I once swapped a piñata for a horror version, it had "blood and guts" in it. It was NIL birthday party and he'd been bragging about how he was going to smash it to bits and get more sweets than anyone else. He went ballistic at it and all of a sudden the party went dead quiet and NIL was stood covered from head to foot in red slime and surrounded by fake body organs. It was hilarious. He cried and all the other kids were in hysterics Grin

KittyHawke80 · 07/06/2018 12:29

That bloody Spider-Man piñata gets me every time. Almost as bad as the kid who pretends to be thrilled to receive a chopping board - “I could cut some meat!” - before getting the generic tablet thing. I’m going, just thinking about it . . .

HildaZelda · 07/06/2018 12:32

What's a NIL?

MissMoneyPlant · 07/06/2018 12:34

Do you also think that pin the tail on the donkey encourages animal cruelty?

Hmm In pin the tail on the donkey the child is guessing where the tail goes. Not beating the donkey until it falls apart.
Kursk · 07/06/2018 12:35

I don’t think violence come into it at all. If you want a reward you have to work for it, in this case physically.
