Have I missed something or is this a very white working class trend

I am really not seeing this peak with BME teens or even white working class so what is it about white middle class children that are disproportionately effected

Or am I completely wrong her maybe there are lots of Asian or black children who are having this same issue

Being working class and black I just couldn’t anyone I know endulging a 4 year old in that way
Is it possible that it’s different parenting style

trans is fashionable now

Have to say that's total rubbish. Trans people are more likely than any other demographic to suffer abuse, to suffer severe mental health problems and are at a massively inflated risk of suicide. To talk about it as if it's a fashionable fad is incredibly ignorant.

I take it you're new here!

At best you'll see faux concern for trans people who are suffering at the hands of the patriarchy. Most of the time it's barely (if at all) concealed contempt, mistrust, misunderstanding and pretty nasty bitching about trans people.

VladmirsPoutine

Why are you switching between referring to teens then referencing 4yr olds?

I guess if you indulged as a small child then your likey to think this should happen when your older

Psychologists have identified a difference between classic gender dysphoria, which tends to start early, well before puberty, and what they are calling Rapid Onset Gender Dysphoria (RoGD), which is what seems to be occurring with a number of teenagers, mainly girls who are attracted to girls.

Classic gender dysphoria has a long history, and as far as I am aware occurs across classes. RoGD (at least at the levels it's currently occurring at) is something newer, and there is a suspicion among psychologists in this area that peer influence and social contagion is involved; and also that many of these girls, who tend to be gender non-conforming, would earlier have identified as butch lesbians. It's the social contagion aspect that might lead to a greater prevalence in middle-class girls, although I don't know if there are any figures to show this.

VladmirsPoutine · 07/06/2018 10:58

I might be flamed to a crisp for saying this but I think it's heavily centred around a current trend/fad. I can't even keep up with the terminology and new labels anymore - it's become rather farcical.

When I was growing up being bi was also seen as trendy and having a navel piercing was one step away from being an anarchist. Every generation is swept up in its own trends; the only issue here is that unlike trends of the past this current trend can cause a lifetime of irreversible physical, psychological and emotional damage.

underneaththeash · 07/06/2018 11:39

I also think there's a fad aspect to it as well. Teens need to feel although they fit in and I don't think being a butch lesbian is currently trendy, so maybe it's easier to be trans. I know a couple of teens (children if friends) who were trans for a bit before decided that they were gay.
My brother was bi for a bit too in his teens, before coming out as gay just after is 17th birthday.

Sweatymoose · 07/06/2018 13:21

@BottleOfJameson erm, yes it is Hmm and as someone whose 90% of their friendship group is LGBTQ+ (including trans!) and is a huge supporter of the cause, I have a decent perspective! and guess what, the circles I do socialise with all have the same view! Several of them teachers who have noticed the trend in the past 2/3 years.

It IS fashionable right now to become trans amoungst teens, they get special treatment and more attention, they have a 'shtik' that makes them stand out, it makes them 'special' and 'unique' especially over social media. It is a fad, and in 10 years time there will be a bunch of mid 20-30 yr olds running around completely confused and regretting what can be a pretty permanent decision - as other PPs have said, bisexuality was the fad when we were teens, yes a few of these used it as a step before coming out as gay, but most of them just did it for attention because is was 'cool'. The difference is experimenting with the same sex isn't as life altering as taking medication, going through years of testing and possible surgery. Teens have no understanding of real life consequences.

And no, this in no way an ignorant attack on ACTUAL trans. What these people jumping on the bandwagon don't realise is what they're doing is incredible detrimental, they're taking away resources for those who actually need them and making a mockery of the actual suffering these people have had their entire lives.

trans is fashionable right now. There's no question of that. There have always been a number of people who genuinely feel trapped in the wrong body biologically and maybe more of them feel able to come forward now it's fashionable. But for every one of them there are a number who think they are trans or gender fluid the minute they experience very normal wobbles with sexuality and gender that are a part of growing up, hormones surging and balancing, and general exploration of who you might be and who you are.

DobbyisFREE · 07/06/2018 14:08

It isn't. Poor people have enough that they are bullied over though so I expect they keep anything that could make them a target hidden. It's a guess though as I only know 1 trans person so hardly much to go off.
