Hi all asking for a friend who has son going on his first army cadet fieldcraft weekend.

What does he need to take and pack in his Bergen? Where would you put the items they take in the Bergen ie sleeping bag at bottom or top?
He has been provided with a Bergen, webbing, water bottle and 2 mess tins.

This might be a bit out of date but anyway

Bergen liner? Waterproof bag
Safety blanket
Matches
Torch
Thermometer
Spare socks/clothes
Rations
Camp stove?
Knife
Sleeping bag
Compass
Sweets
Waterproofs

Probably more!!

Thank you so much. I think he gets his rations and cooking stuff while there Confused.
I do hiking and camping so have an idea but wondered if anything different as it's cadets.

Not knowledgeable about army cadets, but I know with air cadets they get "joining instructions" for any exercise. These include their kit lists and what will be covered pver the weekend. Might be worth seeing if the cadet in question has anything like this?

Also many exercises are run every year on the same format so might be worth getting in touch with any of the older cadets who will have done exactly the same weekend for info and advice.

Hi, this is our fieldcraft kit list –

Uniform
Arrive in
Headdress
Green Belt
Combat Shirt
Plain Green T-Shirt
Combat Jacket
Combat Trousers
Boots
Boot Socks
Twisters

Packed in bag
Fleece
Spare Combat Shirt
Spare Combat Trousers
Spare Green T-Shirt x2
Knife, Fork, Spoon
Mug (plastic/nonbreakable)
Notepad & Pen

Personal Kit
Wash Kit
Towel
Sleeping Bag - suitable for sleeping outdoors
Sleep Wear
Underwear
Slippers - no boots allowed in the onsite classroom
Warm Civillian Clothing e.g. hoody
warm hat and gloves
Plastic bag for dirty clothes
First Aid Kit
Boot Cleaning Kit
snacks

We supply hex cooker, waterproofs and roll mat, and either basha or tents, he will need to check if they are getting this.

In our battalion they are not allowed to take multi tools or knives

He should of done a lesson called Preparation & Packing of Personal Equipment, which tells you what kit goes in your patrol pack and what gets packed in the training vest.

His detachment commander should have a kit list

Hope this helps

I would advise getting a couple of pairs of decent quality walking socks. They reduce friction. Also, plenty of plasters and gel inserts to reduce pressure and relieve blisters.

Waterproof everything! He should have a bergan liner but he should also pack all his socks, clothes etc within separate waterproof (ziplock are good) bags. Helps keep everything organised and also means his kit is less likely to get soaked in torrential rain. Also recommend hand sanitiser. They might be using portaloos and D&V can spread really fast if hygiene isn’t good.

Pro tips:
Velcro belt (much more comfortable in the field than the issue one)
Sandals/crocs - they can wear these during down time rather than boots
A few food bags - sometimes they get meals called "container" meals and the bags can go over the mess tins to keep them clean. Saves work.
Don't take a knife, fork and spoon - you only need the spoon.
Bin bag or large zip locked food bag for rubbish.
