Dress Up Day

DS is 7 they have been learning about Africa this term, which he has really enjoyed. They’ve learned lots of interesting information and he has loved this term.

In a couple of weeks they have a “Africa Dress Up Day” and he’s said he’d like to go as a member of the Masai Tribe. Would it be terrible to allow him to?

I feel uneasy, but he’s been so interested.

I did try to convince him to go as an African animal, but he’s pretty set. Help please!

Dress him up in traditional garb, if you can find it. Just don't black him up ( assuming he isn't black)...

Right, so traditional clothing is ok? Necklaces, dress etc? I mean that’s what he wants...

I can't see why not. The Masaai have pretty specific clothing for ceremonial occasions, so if you can find something like, why not?
That said, I don't know if you can actually find the beaded necklaces and such - depends how "authentic" he wants to be - but surely nobody can take umbrage at a child showing interest in other cultures?

If the school was having a Scottish dress up day children would wear kilts, tartan, woolly jumpers etc. if its a traditional dress up day then go for it, I don't see the harm.

You could always put a suit on him and he could go as a corrupt African leader.
