To call my cat Bustopher?

SparkLee · 05/06/2018 00:16

I adopted a beautiful cat and he is finally here. I absolutely love him already. He is mostly black with some patches of white. And he is quite fat fluffy Grin

Because of his appearance and said abundance of girth fluff, I have decided to give him the name of Bustopher. So I phoned my friend this evening and told her about my new little darling addition and naturally the topic of his name comes up. When I told her his name is Bustopher there was an awkward pause on the phone and she said "umm... that's a bit of a strange name." I explain the origins behind it and she said "Nobody will get the reference and you can't call him Bustopher it sounds like you can't say Christopher properly!"

I'm quite dismayed Shock. First world problem I know but I am just wondering if any of you get the reference to Bustopher? I thought it was an awesome name but is my friend right? Should I just call him Fluffy or Felix or some other cutesy name?

Instantly bustopher jones. Your friend is uncultured.

^This

Anyway most people won't care if they don't get the reference will just think its a 'cute' name. Or think you're saying Buster.

MyOtherUsernameisaPun · 05/06/2018 09:21

I don't get the reference but I still think it's cute and who cares what anyone else things anyway Grin enjoy your new friend!

AveAtqueVale · 05/06/2018 09:28

It's an excellent name. Even if you don't get the reference, cats lend themselves to weird names. We have a boy kitten called Enid though in fairness we thought he was a girl first.

IJustHadToNameChange · 05/06/2018 09:30

Pic! Pic! Pic!

Bustopher is a brilliant name!

PiggyPlumPie · 05/06/2018 09:33

Excellent name, but please tell her his full name is BustopherJonesinWhiteSpats!

AlonsoTigerHeart · 05/06/2018 09:37

He will never be a high court judge with thst name

eagleflies · 05/06/2018 09:42

It's a great name.

UrgentScurryfunge · 05/06/2018 09:48

You must do it! I once had a cat that would have been a good Grisabella, nevertheless she wore her Shakesperian name well.

Away from the TS Elliot theme, I want a cat called Mandu, short for Kathmandu!

ProustianMadeleine · 05/06/2018 09:50

You would be extremely unreasonable if you didn't name him Bustopher Jones.

Please tell her his full name is BustopherJonesinWhiteSpats

^This. It's everything Grin

FuzzyCustard · 05/06/2018 09:51

My first childhood cats (they predated me!) were called Bustopher and Mungo. You have to do it.

phlewf · 05/06/2018 09:51

I agree that it would only be weird if you didn’t give him his full name. My cats have middle names too. And their surname isn’t my surname. I will not whitewash their life before me. At the vet they always assume I’m brining pedigrees because I used their full names to register. Then I get to act all huffy when they act like I’m unhinged (which I clearly am). So in conclusion Bustopher Jones In White Spats is an entirely acceptable name, let’s see a photo.

FuzzyCustard · 05/06/2018 09:52

(Actually Bustopher Jones and Mungo Jerry but that's quite a mouthful.)

FuzzyCustard · 05/06/2018 09:53

My cats (current) also have middle names and a surname. Isn't that normal?

IsabelleSE19 · 05/06/2018 09:54

I didn't get the reference uncultured but loved the name anyway!

Toddlerteaplease · 05/06/2018 10:03

Brilliant name, don't forget the pic.

lottiegarbanzo · 05/06/2018 10:06

Do it. Great name.

lottiegarbanzo · 05/06/2018 10:08

...and even to the unfamiliar ear, surely it sounds like an affectionate version of Buster?

catinboots9 · 05/06/2018 10:11

We used to have a Bustopher Jones as kids. He was amazing. Huge and ginger.

catinboots9 · 05/06/2018 10:11

And he was remarkably fat!!

catinboots9 · 05/06/2018 10:11

@HansSoloTraveller1 my friend had a Mr Mistofolees shortened to Misty

RightOnTheEdge · 05/06/2018 10:15

I too am an "uncultured swine" Grin

I have never heard that poem before. Now that I have I think it's a brilliant name!
I definitely agree with PPs though that he has to be Bustopher Jones.

Bluelonerose · 05/06/2018 10:17

I'm glad others have said their cats have middle names and surnames that are different to theirs Grin

I've found my people Grin

Wotrewelookinat · 05/06/2018 10:24

It’s a fantastic name. I wanted to call my new rescue cat Skimbleshanks but he came with the name Keith and was already a few years old so I thought it would be too confusing for him to change it!

Ps we NEED to see a phot of Bustopher Jones asap!

phlewf · 05/06/2018 11:03

My people indeed. I don’t understand when much loved animals have 1 mundane, standard animal name. DH suggested given them titles (sir, princess rev etc) but I felt that they ought to earn that. So far only 1 has earned the title “inmate”

Yvest · 05/06/2018 11:07

My first thought was TS Elliot - bustopher Jones is not skin and bones in face he’s remarkably fat...
