...to ask what do you wear...

if you work in a banking/corporate environment?

Starting a new job next week and I'm so unsure about the dress code, especially with it being summer. I'm guessing dress trousers for sure, but what kind of tops? Do I have to wear a jacket? So confused!

You need to ask the company you are working for (HR or your new manager) - dress codes have changed a lot. I'm in a financial services company (but don't meet clients or the public), and the code has gone over the years from suits and ties to (in the past year) jeans and t-shirts being fine (as long as not too scruffy).

Depends on the company and whether you are front / middle or back office & whether you have clients on-site. Generally, in my experience, it is formal dress everyday except Friday unless you work for niche investment banks.

I won't be working with any clients, I"m gonna be with HR. I was hoping to go with dress pants and nice blouses, not suits I'm guessing? I don't even own a proper suit but yes I'll have to check with them I guess!

When I worked in admin for a bank I wore smart trousers and top. No suit were needed unless you met with customers, which was not in my job role. A few women wore skirts as well, depends on how comfortable you want to be really.

What were the people who interviewed you wearing? That's probably a good guide.

Former banking PA and analyst here; most days I went with smartish dress with cashmere cardigan or blazer. Alternatively smart trousers with a top, again cardigan or blazer. 99% of the time smart flat shoes like ballet pumps or brogues. Definitely wear the blazer for meetings with senior management or interviewing external candidates, if applicable to your role, on a client meeting floor. You might have a dress down Friday so check that too.
