After school clubs

For rest of the year the school is trying out compulsory after school activities, there's going to be a different one ran everyday and the kids can go to as many as they want and change each week but they have to go to at least one a week. They are meant to hand in their form tomorrow saying which day they are doing for the next 4 weeks. The form says that all children need to choose a club it out even if they already do other clubs after school, there's no option to to none.

DD wants to go with the dance one with her friends, that's fine but DS who is already doing a lot out of school has looked at the form and theres nothing he likes on there. He could do gymnastics which he already does 5 hours a week of out of school and an hour a week in school which he doesnt enjoy.

AIBU to think this isn't a very good idea and to just leave DS's form blank and not make him do it?
Actually can they even enforce this?

If it clashes with his other activities I think you have a good reason for not disrupting what he already does. If it doesn't just make him pick something he's not tried before, it's a good lesson in stepping out of his comfort zone and doing something new. It's only one hour a week for 4 weeks.

I think that is a very odd arrangement, and I doubt it is enforceable (unless, maybe, the school is a private school?).
Personally, I would not rock the boat and would make my DC do something so as to fit in, but I am very non confrontational.

How can after school activities be compulsory? I’d be having a word with the school. I’m a teacher and have never heard of this, I don’t know how it would be possible for everyone to do this. :/

Would agree with FASH that you shouldn't cancel any out of school activities that he already does to fit in with this.

Do you have to pay to take part? Just wondering if it might be perceived by some as free childcare, so incredibly popular.

What’s available?

It only clashes on 2 days so could technically do the other 3 but on 2 of these he is doing something later that evening and the other day is his only day off.
Theres also nothing that he hasnt already tried.

Is this a state school?
I wouldn't be happy having existing regular paid for clubs disrupted by a school over-reaching its boundaries.

Its a private school
