To ask how I get these deep scratches out of our American fridge freezer?

My lovely DC (3) has deeply scratched all the front of our black American style fridge freezer on both doors!

It looks absolutely terrible, and I don't know what I can do to fix it. Any ideas?

It's only 3 months old and cost a lot of money.

Pic attached of one of the scratches, but not very clear as it's really sunny in the kitchen in the moment.

Help!

How did your 3 year old manage to do that?

I would contact the manufacturer on tomorrow and ask if they have any advice.

If I may ask, what makes it an American style appliance?

Sagegreen · 03/06/2018 19:26

Our removals people did this. We had to claim on our home insurance as it was ruined (dents too). If you can't do that the manufacturer may give you some sort of polish? But honestly accidental damage insurance I'm afraid.

MollyHuaCha · 03/06/2018 19:26

He has ruined it. Take the cost of replacement out of his pocket money for the next 18 years.

Alternatively, you could see if it's covered under your house insurance?

WhenEnoughIsEnough · 03/06/2018 19:28

I don't think anything will get the scratches out as they are so deep. My advice would be to claim on home insurance for accidental damage (if you have it).

Alternatively could you buy some sticky back plastic stuff (I've heard good things about dc fix it) and cover it.

It's one of those wide big ones (that are a bugger to get in through the doors!) I have attached a pic of ours.

I have no idea how he did it, or what with. I suspect it was a stone, as he is fond of collecting them for some reason Confused

It can be repainted at a car body shop. Just arrange it in advance and ensure the inside of the fridge is well protected.

Will look into house insurance! thanks

Ring the manufacturer for advice, or try a local car body shop. Or a replacement door?

NotAnotherUserName5 · 03/06/2018 19:33

DuchyDuke-thanks. That's a great idea! Do you have any idea how much they charge for this sort of thing? Could well be cheaper than the excess of my insurance

I got mine for free. Local shop got a trainee to do it ‘as practice’

DuchyDuke · 03/06/2018 19:39

But shouldn’t be more than 20-40 quid. It’s tiny compared to cars

How funny that a Korean company calls that American style. They're not popular here at all because the freezer compartment is so narrow. You can't fit a large frozen pizza box in it and we must have our frozen pizza. We would call it a side by side or fridge with French doors.

NotAnotherUserName5 · 03/06/2018 19:45

MissConductUS-I didn't know that! Yes, it's funny when you think about it.
Yes, the freezer compartment is a bit too small. We also have a deep freeezer.
Thanks Dutchy, will look for a body shop.

I’ve heard that candle wax can work on wood. Worth a try? Just rub a candle (unlit, obvs) over the scratches. You can clean it off if it doesn’t work.

Chapman31 · 03/06/2018 19:51

Would T-cut work like it does on cars?

MissConductUS · 03/06/2018 19:58

The other reason they get vetoed here is because if you are hosting Thanksgiving dinner you'll need a freezer that will hold a 20 pound turkey, which those will not.

We have a large upright freezer in the garage. I save so much money by being able to cook ahead and freeze things and buying meat and so forth at BJ's (like Costco).

Take pictures. They'll be priceless for embarrassing your DS when he's a teenager and too cool for school. Grin

Try WD-40. It works on loads of other materials to hide scratches!

Ohhdear · 03/06/2018 20:10

Scratch-B-Gone

Ohhdear · 03/06/2018 20:13

Just noticed it's black and not stainless steel. Forget that

CuriousaboutSamphire · 03/06/2018 20:16

I've seen a few in rentals that ahve a sticky back plastic film over the doors. They look really good and you can get film that would match the orginal finish

Stuff like this perhaps www.amazon.co.uk/STAINLESS-STEEL-ADHESIVE-APPLIANCE-COVER/dp/B008AJT7R0?tag=mumsnetforum-21

Or these www.ebay.co.uk/bhp/fridge-vinyl

Can't think what title to call them but you can get kitchen and bathroom 'magic men' that repair surfaces of units , sanitary wear etc chips and scratches in situ
