to find hayfever remedies useless?

I now have a full on pressure headache, sore sinuses, itchy throat and want to scratch my own eyes out. Nose is dripping like a tap day and night. None of the antihistamines work for me. It's a minor ailment and I'm grateful for my good health every day but I'm actually feeling really unwell because of hay fever. And drowsy! Non drowsy medicine does not exist.

Agree - unfortunately it seems to be true and error finding medication that works. Neither the cetirizine or loratadine(?) Work for me but I’ve recently tried chlorphenamine tablets and they seem to be the best so far but they do make me drowsy. And eye drops. Lots of eye drops

mrsp2009 · 03/06/2018 15:59

*trial and error Hmm

Jeezoh · 03/06/2018 16:00

Pironase spray has been a godsend for me this year, got my hay fever under control really quickly.

AnneOfCleavage · 03/06/2018 16:04

Are you just buying over the counter or prescription ones? The over the counter ones are fine for my mild hay fever but for when it's bad I need my strong strength prescription ones. I find I don't need nose spray or eye drops on high strength ones.

Just upped my DD's hay fever meds to higher strength as she was on s low dose and suffering. She's now on quadruple strength and heaps improved. She was feeling so ill with suffering before upping strength so try that.

BlueJava · 03/06/2018 16:05

Have you tried "Hay Max" my DH tried it and reckons it's amazing despite being very sceptical. Good luck.

rainbowfudgee · 03/06/2018 16:07

Thanks. Think I need to go for prescription meds but there are no GP appointments for 6 weeks... I wouldn't like to say it's an urgent problem as such to warrant a same- day appointment but it's making me miserable day to day.

I can't take the antihistamine tablets as they turn me into a monster, but as long as i take becanase early enough and continue to take it twice a day for the season, i can usually function ok. Obviously i don't go out early evening after a high pollen day as that is the worst time of day for mine, neither do i venture near flowers/hay fields, but with sensible precautions and becanase i can just about manage.

Kescilly · 03/06/2018 16:09

I’m the same, even prescriptions barely make a dent in my allergies. If one more person tells me it will clear up with honey ...

Fluffyears · 03/06/2018 16:12

It’s a miserable affliction. I’m on loratadine (which is non drowsy) and using Puritan spray on top which is probably next tan great idea and I’m still suffering. We have a lovely cal festival and last year was awful as it’s held in a field and people walking on the grass seemed to increase the pollen in the air I was badly affected and had to come home to lie with a clean damp tea towel over my face. I felt rotten for days afterwards too.

Pinkywoo · 03/06/2018 16:12

The only (prescription only) antihistamine that works for me is fexofenadine, and no side effects either.

Fluffyears · 03/06/2018 16:14

@kescilly and also the ‘stop rubbing your eyes, you’ll just make it worse’ I KNOW BUT MY FUCKING EYEBALLS ARE ITCHY! Anyone who has never suffered hasn’t a clue!

DailyMailFail101 · 03/06/2018 16:18

I find the only one that works is the kids piriton liquid 10ml every four hours... but makes one very drowsy, the rest are useless agree!

rainbowfudgee · 03/06/2018 16:20

I have just ordered hay max on amazon. Thanks for the recommendation, I hope it helps!

I used to have really bad hayfever. This year it’s only mild due to medicines I’m taking for skin condition making it go away! I’m on fexofenadine 180 mg twice daily and cetraZine twice daily (4 times daily when flare ups happen)

IReallyHateCycling · 03/06/2018 16:21

DP has prescription but my God he is sooo miserable with it this year.

Does all the right things but is suffering more than ever.

Love the Summer but hate the effects. Our windows , floors etc are covered with pollen no matter how many times I vacuum up

rainbowfudgee · 03/06/2018 16:21

Would any of you make an urgent GP appointment to try to get prescription hayfever meds?

OP posts:
Twinkie1 · 03/06/2018 16:21

DS is on fenafexadine as his hay fever brings on asthma and that's not even helping at the moment. Poor sod came back from cricket match this morning and sat in a cold shower for ages to try and relieve the itching and sneezing. He showers every time he comes into the house from outside and we don't dry any of his clothes, towels or bed linen outside, that sort of helps usually but at the moment nothing is helping.

MilesJuppIsMyBitch · 03/06/2018 16:24

As a fellow sufferer, I recommend you try pills, nasal spray AND eye-drops, as I was advised to do by a hay fever nurse.

Really works for me (after a few days). Thanks (

wildbhoysmama · 03/06/2018 16:25

pinkywoo I was just coming onto say the same thing! I call them the big guns-only ones that work and zero side effects: Brilliant.

londonloves · 03/06/2018 16:25

This might sound a bit wafty but nettle supplements have saved my sanity. I take full dose twice a day. Only have an attack when I forget to take them.

Buster72 · 03/06/2018 16:29

Vaseline in your nostrils to catch pollen and a nasal douche

lizzie1970a · 03/06/2018 16:29

A kenalog (steroid) injection got rid of it completely within a day for me and the effects lasted 4 years. That was 15 years or so ago. It came back gradually but never to the full effect it used to be. I had a second injection about 8 years ago. I barely have hay fever now but am in my 50s so perhaps I've outgrown it. Had to really insist to get the injection though and changed Drs twice. It is truly miserable.

ToPlanZ · 03/06/2018 16:34

I cannot recommend medibee highly enough. Summer used to be a complete misery for me. Treatment included prescription antihistamines, eye drops, steroid cream for itchy skin, nasal spray, infrared probes for itchy nose, nasal filters that fit inside your nose, air filters in the house, a humidifier in the bedroom, a sheet over the top of all the bedding that could be removed before bed. An immediate change of clothes upon entering the house and a shower, special washing liquid that takes out pollen and dust. I even used a saline solution to wash out my sinuses.

And I STILL had severe hayfever and could often in summer be found at 3am sat on the floor of a cold running shower, not crying because that only made the blocked nose and headache worse. I had a cracked tongue from always having to breathe with my mouth open day and night and I was like a walking zombie to boot.

Medibee are pollen capsules. I had tried local honey but I just think the dose of pollen in medibee is so much bigger that it actually worked. They literally changed my life. I'm sat here with the windows open, DP is cutting the grass. That would have been unthinkable. They may not work for you although they did for my son and several of his friends. Got to be worth a try though. Good luck finding what works for you.

rainbowfudgee · 03/06/2018 16:38

How can I go about booking an injection? Is it a private Dr thing?

OP posts:
e1y1 · 03/06/2018 16:44

The ONLY one I have ever found to work (and I suffer not just hay fever, but dust, skin and chemical allergies too) is Benadryl

It MUST be the “fast acting 15 min one” as this has the ingredient Acrivastine in it, you can get it with or without Pseudophederine (sinus decongestant (Pseudophedierine one is sold as Benadryl plus.

The standard one a day Benadryl has the active ingredient Citrizine (just like Piriteze etc).

The Acrivastine works better than the GP prescribed Fexafenodine, I stopped taking it as you can’t take that and Benadryl at same time.
