Annoyed at cleaning lady on holiday

helloworld88 · 03/06/2018 11:40

On holiday at the moment in Spain, we've just wanted a really relaxing holiday so have been getting up late and not really leaving the room for the day until about 12. Weekdays have been fine but yesterday (Saturday) we had the do not disturb sign on the door and the cleaner still knocked and tried coming in! This was about half 11. She didn't speak much English and we don't speak any Spanish but asked her to come back later and got the impression it was I do it now or not at all. So she gave us some towels etc. Now today (Sunday), DH and I had a late night last night and wanted a lie in but she's knocking the door at 8:55!! Granted we didn't have the do not disturb sign on the door but hadn't needed it at that time the rest of the week. I suspect the cleaning lady during the weekday is different to that on the weekend. AIBU to be really annoyed at this!

Leave the do not disturb on and go talk to the receptionist at the Hotel about it.
Does sound annoying

Midthreademergencynamechange · 03/06/2018 11:45

The cleaners probably only work part time and you are preventing them from finishing the job and getting on with their day. I sincerely doubt they are doing it on purpose to annoy you.

Yanbu about Saturday but yabu about sunday

Popc0rn · 03/06/2018 11:47

"She's knocking the door at 8:55!! Granted we didn't have the do not disturb sign on the door"

I get that it'd be annoying to have someone try and come in if you'd put the do not disturb sign on, but...YABU to be annoyed about this morning, seeing as you didn't put the sign on the door. She's just trying to do her job, seems an odd thing to get really annoyed about.

icelollycraving · 03/06/2018 11:51

She has a job to do. She can’t possibly take into account every guest’s sleeping requirements.
You had no do not disturb sign on the door do it seems reasonable to try to service the room.
I haven’t thought of it in years but Hotel Babylon was a bloody brilliantly trash tv,

helloworld88 · 03/06/2018 12:00

It just seems really strange to me that the rest of the week has been ok with our routine and just this other cleaning lady is a just a bit arsey! If through the week it had been like this we'd have changed our routine to fit in with it (laid by the pool for an hour or so etc while she was here)

To be fair you are stopping them do there job which may result in loosing there wages, bonuses or getting fired. Any time after 10am is a perfectly fine time to clean a room. Most hotels will clean either between 7am and 9am when breakfast is on or after 10am when people have had breakfast then gone out of the room for the day.

Vitalogy · 03/06/2018 12:01

Glue the DND sign to the door Grin and inform reception you do not want to be disturb or you room to be serviced.

Vitalogy · 03/06/2018 12:03

*it's not compulsory to have your room cleaned PP.

helloworld88 · 03/06/2018 12:03

@Cheesenacho123 bloody hell I would be extremely annoyed if someone came in my room at 7am! Also what's the point of a do not disturb sign if they'll just come in anyway?

Cheesenacho123 · 03/06/2018 12:04

Also if you don’t acknowledge your present in the room when she shouts ‘room cleaning’ then yes she will just walk in with key card or keys in hand. Also unless it’s a small hotel you’ll have a different cleaner every couple days or even every day.

BiteyShark · 03/06/2018 12:06

Cleaners start early on holiday. You are on holiday but they are at work. That time is early to you but it would be great for us as we would be at breakfast hoping the cleaning lady was doing our room Grin.

They have DND signs for a reason. I put ours on the door when we go to bed and take it off when we leave in the morning.

Cheesenacho123 · 03/06/2018 12:06

Fair enough a do not disturb sign should be acknowledged but just a polite no thank you when she walks in would be enough

cc5601 · 03/06/2018 12:10

i know my room is going to be cleaned so i get up and go to breakfast or just pop out to another part of the hotel. they have a job to do if i want my room clean.

sweeneytoddsrazor · 03/06/2018 12:11

Do you start work at lunchtime? Just ask for your room not be serviced.

Eatalot · 03/06/2018 12:11

Sleep of your hangover by the pool and stop being such miserable sods. You are on holiday. The cleaner has a hard enough job picking up after filthy tourists as it is.

Ps iv seen kids changing and moving do not disturb signs o
In hotels more than once so they are not always reliable.

Jaxhog · 03/06/2018 12:11

YANBU for her ignoring your DND notice. Is it also in Spanish though? But you run the risk of not having your room serviced. At least she gave you clean towels.

YANBU for her knocking to clean at 8:55 on a sunday morning. She probably thought you'd be having breakfast. It's hardly early. And no, she wouldn't remember your particular habits! Put the DND notice out next time.

Cleaners get paid peanuts and only get allocated minutes to clean your room. Too many people wanting to interrupt their routine costs them time they don't have. Be a bit more considerate.

Jaxhog · 03/06/2018 12:13

I meant YABU regarding sunday!

itswinetime · 03/06/2018 12:14

Loads of reasons the weekends might be different more people checking in/out so they have to do the rooms in a different order. They may only be paid half days or have to do something extra on the weekends they don't in the week. I get it's annoying but it's not personal they are just trying to do their job.

frasier · 03/06/2018 12:18

When I practically lived in hotels for a few years (working worldwide) this was the bane of my life.

I had people ignoring the do not disturb sign (“Well some people put them on and leave”) and even walking in when I was asleep.

I used to put a chair up against the door do I could hear someone enter if the door didn’t have an inside chain. I’ve also, in a passive aggressive moment after being invaded three days running, rung security and told them someone was trying to break in!

Complain to management. I don’t care if they are “only trying to do their job”. They get paid, you are paying. You get to decide what happens.

AnnieAnoniMouser · 03/06/2018 12:22

YANBU if you have the DND sign on the door, as long as you realise it might mean not getting your room serviced. You can always get some fresh towels from reception.

YABU if you don’t have the DND sign in the door. They need to get an early start to get all the rooms done. This will suit some & not others and they try to work around that in most places.

It pisses me off a LOT if they knock or enter when the DND sign is on. DND means DND.

gillybeanz · 03/06/2018 12:32

YABU, leave the do not disturb sign on your door, but don't expect your room clean.
Most people don't hang around in their rooms all dy when on holiday, she probably isn't used to it.
Anyway, you can't expect the hotel to have a cleaner hanging around to clean your room, so you'll have to do without, I suppose.
it sounds like she was trying to do her job during her paid working hours.

AlonsosLeftPinky · 03/06/2018 12:41

You're very unreasonable to be annoyed at someone knocking on your door when you haven't bothered to put the sign on.

You're also unreasonable to have not mentioned the knocking with the sign on the door given you admit the maid had little grasp of English, and I'm assuming your Spanish isn't all that fabulous either.

VickieCherry · 03/06/2018 12:44

Go and tell reception you don't want your room cleaned, so they don't put you on the list. No DND sign = cleaning, whatever day it is.

The chambermaid will probably be finished by midday, so unless they do a second shift of cleaning you won't get your room done.
