Hoovering up food

Settle this for me please, who is unreasonable me or DH, I've just witnessed him hoovering up from the kitchen counter loads of breadcrumbs along with some other dry food debris. I think this is disgusting, crumbs on the carpet which can't be swept fair enough, but from the kitchen counter and a fair amount imo is just bloody lazy. He thinks it's perfectly acceptable and makes more sense. He reckons any food item as long as it's not meat is fine for the hoover.

And I know, what a riveting Saturday night but we are actually clearing up to leave holiday.

@lineys that image is amusing me Grin no he uses the long pole attachment, not an actual upright vacuum cleaner.

@drwhy that's my fear, it all festering in there as a hoover bag lasts far too long for all bits of food to be sitting in there as far as I'm concerned!

Even with the pole thingy, I wouldn't want egg in my hoover. Grin

SoddingUnicorns · 02/06/2018 22:24

@e1y1 I have one of those too Blush

BusterGonad · 02/06/2018 23:06

I hoovered out the dust in the bath once, it isn't worth the hassle as it scratches the bath tub!!!

e1y1 · 02/06/2018 23:15

So he's putting the whole actual vacuum cleaner on the workshop and sucking up cooked food including egg?

I now have an image of him stood on the worktop pushing the upright back and forth Grin

Unless of course you have a canister Vac, which to be honest I don’t understand who would; they’re Satan’s hoovers.

@LeChatDeNuit

Run a bucket (or sink) full of hot water, add some bleach and bit of washing up liquid and chuck the attachments in. Let them soak a while then give them a bit of a wash with a cloth, just as you would dishes (of course I don’t use a cloth that’s ever used for dishes, but have a dw anyway). Rinse and let air dry.

You can also put vacuum attachments or the dustpan and brush attachments through the dishwasher if you are concerned about their cleanliness.

Depends how wet the food is.

I once - many years ago at a party- saw someone hoovering up vomit from a carpet.

TimeToDash · 03/06/2018 07:44

I don't hoover the worktop (wodge of kitchen roll and antibac is quicker and easier) but crumbs on the floor - of course!

speakout · 03/06/2018 07:56

I use cotton cloths. A wipe with a damp cloth and use the other hand as a shovel to collect the crumbs.

TheNoodlesIncident · 03/06/2018 08:00

I have a little dustpan and brush I got from Dunelm. I only use it for getting food waste like crumbs from the worktop, it doesn't get used on the floor or similar.

I don't think I like the idea of food bits in the vacuum, tbh, even though I could empty the Shark canister promptly so it wouldn't get rank in there... any large chunks of food I see on the carpet I just pick up and put in the bin before vacuuming anyway. And I have to say Es ca PEA! as well Bits of egg and stuff? Urgh.

ProfYaffle · 03/06/2018 08:13

My Nan used to have one of those little hand held Ewbank things for sweeping up crumbs off the dining table.

speakout · 03/06/2018 08:18

I wouldn't use the same equipment for a floor and a worktop.

Unhygienic.

BertieBotts · 03/06/2018 08:53

I put far worse things on my kitchen counter than a bit of plastic which has touched a floor Confused

(Raw chicken, raw egg, neat cleaning fluids, food waste canister, things which have been mouldy, cat food, etc etc)

BMW6 · 03/06/2018 09:25

I am with your DH on this one. I hoover worktops, sofas, TV and stand, shelves etc etc.
Once kitchen work surfaces are crumb free I clean with anti bac so no "contamination" from using the hoover attachment!
