Sorry to be nosey
Just been chatting to a girlfriend about pensions

I am 48, single, self employed and have £79,000 in pension savings

Is this good, bad or average?
I think I'm going to be well short of the £300,000 recommended!!

ginger Flowers

I was on CA a while ago and I think it is awful how this country treats carers. Says a lot about the UK if some people get paid less than £3400 anually for a 24/7 job without a break and have to go without a lot of things whilst others have £££££ in their pension pots.

Nothing. DH is in bad health, we've used all our savings and have zero and no pension schemes or anything. I reckon I'll just stick my head in the oven if I get old.

I’ve got 10 years of civil service pension, 7 of which will be payable at 65, the remainder at state pension age (68 or above....) No lump sum in either scheme, but a decent defined benefit (about £12k per year accumulated so far).
From my previous job I have £13k in a stakeholder scheme, plus an additional £7k added this year to manage child benefit. This is essentially a bonus pot, which I’ll start accessing at 55. Not quite 40, but close enough!

That is my thinking ginger.
Ive never had a big income.

State pension more than what i get now but when my kids leave home i can move to a 2 bed.

Problem will be if they dont leave home.. feel awful realising that i need them to leave home.

I’m 60 this year. Have £200k in savings and we will liberate £200k from the house (which was mine when we married) by downsizing when I retire. DH also has a good pension but he’s younger than me so has another 13 years to work.

AnnabelleLecter · 03/06/2018 10:04

DH and mine combined will give us £20k+ at 55.
Coupled with savings, mortgage will be paid off and eventually state pension.
We also have a mortgage free holiday cottage we could let and get up to £10k a year from.
If we downsize to a 3 bed it will give us another £200k.

I'm early 50s, I have around 250k in my pension pot. A good start, if you're concerned, is to go through pensions you have and list them out with Company you worked for, Pension company, pot value or amount per year, and see where you get to. Most companies allow you to pay more in, but probably won't match your contribution.

Not enough to live in the manner I wish.
