What actually happens at Slimming World?

I've been trying to pluck up the courage to go to one but feeling really anxious.
I'm currently doing Slimming World on my own (and doing well with my diet so far) but I am wondering whether I would benefit from attending one of the groups.
I have never been to one before so I suppose it is just fear of the unknown.
I just wondered how they run exactly?
Do they shout out the weight to the rest of the group? (That is the main thing I'm worried about).

I found that staying for meetings massively helped me stay focused. I'm not a joiner inner so never really talked to other people at the meetings because I can't be arsed but lots of people made friendship groups. Group depends on the consultant tbh. A boring consultant makes a very dull group.

God yes. If your consultant goes on holiday and the cover consultant is crap... Book a holiday yourself

Our cover consultant is MEAN. they will be all like "Binary. You put on 3lbs this week. And I see that you have been fluctuating for some time. Maybe you should call target?"

Those sessions are normally dead..

I can only stay to group in school holidays but they have never gone round the group commenting on gains/losses. Nobody can see/hear your weight or gains/losses.

Our Group Leader is very good - very funny - but it is true that they are all about as large as I am. TBH that doesn't bother me too much as I always feel that a very slim person would be more judgemental of me (probably not true I know, but it's how I feel.)

Ours has a FB group too which is very useful.

I don't stay on the taster days even if I could because I can't be arsed making anything to bring.

If it was anything like Little Britain then I wouldn't go - why pay money to be insulted? I have been to other slimming groups too - WW and LL and none of them was like Little Britain otherwise they wouldn't be in business for long.

The only people in the room who will know your weight are the consultant and the person at the scale.

I've done the weighing at the group I go to a few times to cover someone who was ill and like Grumpy said above, when you're doing the scales it is very fast paced and you give no thought at all to the actual number. I'm way more concerned about writing it down correctly in your book and saying something encouraging ( or keeping quiet if that's what it seems like you'd prefer). It such a blur of numbers and faces that I couldn't put a single one together at the end. I definitely am not sat there thinking about how much you weigh or judging in any way.

This is how it goes.

  1. You wear your thinnest shortest summer dress for weigh in. Even in December.
  2. You don't eat anything until after weigh in.
  3. On arrival you take off your shoes (and anything else that might tip the scales like contact lenses )
  4. You pay to get weighed.
  5. You either stay for "group" . Bemoaning your weight gain because you have spent the whole of the previous week eating sweets and getting smashed on alcohol / or that you're hormonal because it's "star" week.
  6. You leave, stopping off at the chippie on the way*

Add to number three that you shave legs, armpits and wonder about shaving pubes as it might weigh something. You then pluck your eyebrows too just to be on the safe side.

Don’t be scared everyone is there for the same reason. Get weighed as early as possible as the IT goes in order so you can do your result first. I used to do the pay desk or weigh desk at my old one but now i’ve moced.

Chickychoccyegg · 02/06/2018 13:16

I go to s.w on my own, I'm pretty anti social,

you go in pay, weigh, get a cup of coffee and chat to other members (sit on my phone) consultant goes round the group asking how your getting on/set any goals/celebrate any weight lose etc, never ever announce weight (they are not allowed to do that), it's quite good for picking up tips, ideas etc and I do enjoy the regular taster nights !!!

MrsSchadenfreude · 03/06/2018 09:41

I ditched my first group because it took so bloody long. Pitch up at 7.30 for weigh in, so many people to weigh, still there till 9.30 what with the motivational talk that I didn’t get home till 10.

If you’re in Central London, I can strongly recommend the Oxford Circus one with Dyanne. Quick, no fuss and short motivational chats, and no judging if you just Wrigh and go.

KinkyAfro · 03/06/2018 09:50

I go to WW, our leader tells the group loss/gain but not an individuals unless it's a massive one. She always asks if the member minds if she tells everyone though

FluffyMcCloud · 03/06/2018 09:57

When I first joined I really enjoyed the SW group. Consultant would go round the group and say if you’d lost or gained and everyone would clap (“small gain this week Emma, but well done for coming back”) and then a quick talk about how your week has been or what is coming up the following week. Problem was, it got very samey very quickly. With new people joining there would be a lot of the same questions (“I’m struggling with lunches at work, what do you suggest?”) and once you’ve been a while you know the plan inside out and it just gets a bit dull...
there was a raffle every week at my group too. And slimmer of the week won a basket of fruit.

crazycatgal · 03/06/2018 10:07

In our group the consultant just goes around the group asking each person how they have done. It's bloody boring and patronising.

Lulusmother · 03/06/2018 10:15

My friend and I went. Did the 12 weeks for the price of 10. Had to wait until the dot of 5:15pm before the scales were switched on. Bizarre. Then we ended our 12 weeks -gave up- got inundated with texts from the leader saying stuff like" hi Hun where are you, am worried about you .." when really she was worried about our fivers.

We weigh ourselves at hers now...

00100001 · 03/06/2018 10:18

yYou have to wait until the "exact" time, otherwise the session would creep in length.

Just say weigh in opens at 5.15. And people start arriving and queuing at 5.10. If they opened it then, people would arrive at 5.05... And would weigh in earlier and so on... Weigh in would go on for bloody ever!

MrsMoastyToasty · 04/06/2018 19:36

I forgot to add.

  1. Woe betide you if you decide to stay to Group and you sit in the WRONG CHAIR. Smug Target Member and her cronies will try and kill you with their death stares.
Dartsplayer · 04/06/2018 19:59

The key when you stay to group is to find a consultant you like and a good group. I love our group and they are really helpful and friendly and I stay every week. One tip though if you don't click with your current group, don't give up and find another one. Good luck
