Feel like worse mum ever

19 month old DS in bed bath last night. I ran the cold tap but a bit of hot came out first and has scalded his lower arm. He cried at the time and then stopped and was playing normally.

This morning it’s very red and warm to touch. I feel like the worst Mum as it was my fault and just want to fix it but I can’t.

I’m going to take him to the minor injuries this morning to have it looked at but there are no blisters, just redness so hoping it will be ok.

Oh bless your heart. It’s ok. Accidents happen! It’s not like you left him unattended to get drunk and he scolded himself. We’ve all been there in some ways where an accident has happened and we feel bad but the feeling will pass.

It’s obviously not bothering him too much today so please don’t beat yourself up. Taking him is a good idea though, or the walk in centre? Just get it checked out.

Would he tolerate a cold flannel on it? Not sure if that’s the done thing to do but that’s what my mum did for us!

Hobnobsarenotfordunking · 02/06/2018 07:14

We’ve got a minor injuries down the road so going there once he has had breakfast. It doesn’t seem to be bothering him at all and he will let me touch it.

I put a cold flannel on it last night as he wouldn’t let me hold it under running water for long.

I just keep looking at it and crying, my poor baby.

Agree with PP. We've all been there - if not this exact situation then something else like a fall. Don't beat yourself up, take your DS to a walk in centre today and get it checked out but it's probably all fine.

Pfftlife · 02/06/2018 07:17

If it's not bothering him and he's letting you touch it also there's no blister what are you going to get it checked out for?

I wouldn't beat yourself up over it, accidents happen

BillywilliamV · 02/06/2018 07:19

I would leave it, someone spilt hot chocolate on my DD a fortnight ago and it blistered and looked horrendous but its almost gone now. If theres no blister or skin breakage it will be gone in a day or two. Try not to be too hard , these things happen, no real harm done.

redcarbluecar · 02/06/2018 07:20

Ouch! But just an accident, and doesn’t sound too serious. Hope It gets better fast; am sure it will.
I’m not sure I agree with the statement in your username, but that’s a separate issue.

AlmostAJillSandwich · 02/06/2018 07:25

Accidents happen, you're not a bad mum, a bad mum wouldn't be tearing herself apart with guilt!

When i was just turned 2 my mum had me sitting on the living room floor, and got up to go heat me a bottle. In the few minutes she was out the room i managed to crawl over to the fireplace, squeeze my fingers through the grate of the fire guard, and put my left hand IN the fire. Cue ambulance, rushed to hospital, and the minor amputation of the very tips of my fingers as all the nerves and blood supply was dead.
Aside from a few scars, the reality was much better than the prognosis, and i'm even left handed. Not once in my life since i was old enough to be told how i got those scars, have i ever thought for even a split second my mum was a bad mum.

What Pfftlife said.

ForEverlong · 02/06/2018 07:30

It won’t be the last accident. I’ve knocked my kids flying by accidentally tripping them or falling over them, amongst many other things. Don’t beat yourself up. If it’s not blistered it’ll heal.

notsohippychick · 02/06/2018 07:33

I burnt my arm in a gas hob about ten years ago. It was sore, no blistering but still went to the walk in centre as it was a large burn.

Ended up being quite a serious burn which is still scared. When through a few layers of skin and had it bandages and re dressed for weeks.

I’m sure no minor injuries unit would object checking out a burn on a child.

Ceebs85 · 02/06/2018 07:48

Doesn't even sound like it needs the walk in centre unless you've other reasons to be concerned.

Try not to beat yourself up. Genuine accident which could have happened to literally anyone

Flaming0 · 02/06/2018 07:49

Don’t feel bad, it was just an accident. Children’s skin is sensitive, so it goes red more quickly. I wouldn’t bother going to the walk in centre. Just keep it clean and the redness will go away. The fact that there are no blisters means it’s a minor burn.

FusionChefGeoff · 02/06/2018 07:51

There is no need to go to the walk in centre!

embod · 02/06/2018 07:53

Accidents happen don’t beat yourself up. When my son was 18 months I turned around for a second and he picked up my ghds, turned them on and put them to his face. Obviously copying me.

We ended up being sent to a specialist burns unit in the next town. It looked horrendous but healed fine and no scarring.
I felt absolutely dreadful though.

Get your son checked if you feel he needs it.

thecatsarecrazy · 02/06/2018 07:59

Op i feel awful. Took my kids down the beach yesterday. We went away for 2days and dh was ill in bed 2nd day so i just tried to make the most of it. My 15 month old baby has burnt arms this morning. It wasn't hot down and we didn't stay long

ArsenalsPlayingAtHome · 02/06/2018 08:00

OP Flowers

Don't beat yourself up.

I was once stood right by the DCs as they were on the trampoline. I thought they'd zipped it up, they thought I had...

Cue DD falling flat on the concrete flagging. Never heard a sound like it, felt sick to my stomach. She was fine.

Hope you & your DC are OK xx

Urbanbeetler · 02/06/2018 08:03

Every month there are posts starting something linke this... I feel like I am the worse mum ever... but the ops are never, ever be mums, just human ones. If you were a bad mum, you wouldn’t be posting, you just either wouldn’t notice or care or would be trying to cover up what had happened.

You are undoubtedly a good mum.

Mummyoflittledragon · 02/06/2018 08:15

I wouldn’t go to the walk in centre. Maybe get some aloe gel from the chemist to soothe the burn. And have a nice day. The worst mum ever - perhaps not eh, give yourself a break.

Hobnobsarenotfordunking · 02/06/2018 21:12

Thanks everyone. I took him this morning and he is fine. I wouldn’t have bothered if it wasn’t my own arm but NHS says to get anyone under 5 checked so I thought it best.

Accidents happen!
My worst mum incidents;
I had polished the floor in the day, got up in the middle of the night to soothe DS to sleep, but he needed rocking so I got up, forgot about the floor and slipped holding him. Instinctively moved my hip and him so he didn’t touch the floor, so I was bruised for days, but worth it six he didn’t get hurt, he cried loads from the shock tho.

Was cooking with chilli and washed my hands multiple times, but it wasn’t enough, touched DS dummy and he came out in a rash.

Still feel guilty about those now!
