Tips on learning to ride a bike

RoseanneBarred · 02/06/2018 01:00

DD (age 10) is active and confident with most things.

However, she has a mental block when it comes to learning to cycle!

Both her elder siblings learnt when they were much younger.

Any tips as to how I can teach her / stop her worrying about hurting herself?

TIA

This is how to teach a child to ride a bike in 30 minutes

If you are in London, look at cycleconfident.com. Our council provided free lessons through them. It took 2 mornings.

DH is a cycle instructor and they take the pedals off bikes, for those too big for balance bikes, and let the kids use as a balance bike so as to get used to it. Once they are confident with balancing, try putting penals back on.

ooops PEDALS!

So we adjusted the seat, pumped up the tyres, made sure height / size correct.

She went on it today, been on it 2 minutes and said she had grazed her ankle...this is a long process!

Am seriously considering some 1-2-1 tuition to help her (& us Grin)

I had a "mental block" too and didn't learn to ride until I was 11. What helped me was learning that you had to slightly move the front wheel to balance. Once I had that, I was off to the races.

We she has made progress... hopefully more tomorrow Grin

Would definitely recommend taking the pedals off and using it like a big balance bike first. My nervous and uncoordinated DS got it really quickly once we did this
