We moved to this house last year, and we love love love it. We inherited a mature garden, which had clearly had a lot of time and money lavished on it. Enter DH and I, who are at best aspiring gardeners! We have done a pretty decent job this year, and managed to bring through quite a bit.

However, there are a few plants that I just don’t know what they are. I’ve taken photos, google imaged them; the lot. I don’t know what they are. I want to care for the garden properly.

Would I be unreasonable to leave a message with the estate agent we went through last year to see if we can contact them to ask what the plants are?

Why not post the pics on here I am sure people will be more than happy to help. Grin

foxycleopauper · 01/06/2018 21:12

The EA might not still hold their details a year on. Try the gardening board on here!

W0rriedMum · 01/06/2018 21:13

If they love gardening - which is clearly the case - they would love to hear from you as long as circumstances permit (i.e. not old and in hospital).
Gardeners are like that - sentimental about their past gardens.

Maelstrop · 01/06/2018 21:15

Post pics on here, we’ll have a go.

I moved into a property with mature gardens: I couldn’t tell you what half the stuff is! So maybe pointless asking your vendor.

ziggiestardust · 01/06/2018 21:17

I should say they were absolute dream vendors. Offer - completion in 27 days (driven as much by us as them), house left absolutely spotless, fitted window blinds/curtains/light fittings/mirrors/office furniture left free of charge, bottle of wine and card left for us on day of move in... they were amazing.

They’d also been there since 1970s so they’d definitely planted whatever was there

Post it on here... I’ve had mystery plants before and people have identified them :)

Heroo · 01/06/2018 21:23

I think the vendors would be quite happy to receive such sommunication, they will be happy you are taking care of the garden they planted

ziggiestardust · 01/06/2018 21:26

Some kind of lilly maybe?

We have no idea what kind of tree this is. It almost has Olive tree like characteristics, but it’s really tall!

Large purple coloured tree that blossoms pink blossom in spring really early, and produces fruit in summer that look like tiny plums.

Can't hurt to try, if you leave your number then they may be more then happy to call you. X

Momzilla82 · 01/06/2018 21:36

Pretty sure the purple tree is cotinius.

earlybirdhasanap · 01/06/2018 21:39

My mum is an avid gardener. The only thing that makes her sad about downsizing from our family home is the garden has gone to pot. She sees it when she walks the dog.
If your vendors are anything like her she'd be more than happy to give information on plants etc. They'll probably be thrilled you're wanting to continue where they left off.

W0rriedMum · 01/06/2018 22:00

We think the last tree is a crab apple profusion (malus).

bridgetreilly · 01/06/2018 22:08

The first ones look like lilies to me too. When they flower, they'll be easy to identify.

MereDintofPandiculation · 01/06/2018 22:16

The first ones look like lilies but they could also be purple loosestrife, Lythrum salicaria. Second is definitely not an olive, could possibly be a willow or could be something else whose name escapes me at the moment. Third isn't Cotinus since you say it has pink flowers. Thought first it could be a flowering cherry, but as you say it has fruit are like tiny plums (rather than tiny cherries) it could be an ornamental plum. Both cherries and plums are in the genus Prunus. The yellowy leaves in the bottom RH corner look like Aucuba.

OP we have a similarly lovely and mystifying but our sellers were a real pain so we would never contact them unless we needed to. Luckily a relative is pretty good with plants and has worked out what most of ours are. I was glad we waited a while year to see everything bloom before doing any pruning!

I'm no expert but if the first pic turns out not to be lilies they might be asters which have daisy like flowers. Very pretty.

halesie · 01/06/2018 22:18

*mystifying garden

ziggiestardust · 01/06/2018 22:24

Oooooh this is all fab info! We thought lillies for the first one too, when do they flower?

OP posts:
Hissy · 01/06/2018 22:25

My oh has a really mental tree, almost singular white flowers appear randomly, then the petals all fall off then an almost pine coney thing drops, big leaves. Bonkers

Hissy · 01/06/2018 22:26

Ea has to keep all transaction info for 7 years, give em a whirl, you never know!

BoardingSchoolMater · 01/06/2018 22:26

First pic looks like lilies to me. Lovely!

nemno · 01/06/2018 22:37

We have that purple tree and just call it "The Prunus", we have other sorts of prunus as well but that one gets the title. It is very vigourous, it grows widthwise and upwards very quickly. We give it an extremely severe prune every 2 years and are vigilent at removing new growths from its roots which can occur some distance from the parent plant.

I think the first one is a lily, the second possibly a weeping silver leafed pear, Pyrus Salicifolia Pendula
